Ma(r)xTutorials **new version** 2011

A set of Max tutorials for beginners.  It contains a collections of small demos and examples that could serve as tutorials and/or models for students just beginning to learn Max.  For the most part they are pretty well documented.  It is intended to supplement the tutorials that come with the program.  It is now available in two formats: the original version.  A single large, multi-layered patch or a folder of discreet little patches.  NOTE: Neither of this are stand alone applications.  Both requires that you have installed the full Max program (or at least a demo of the program) or the freely distributed MaxPlayer.  I assume it will work under both Mac and Windows operating systems, but I have no way of testing on Windows.

Download links: (ca. 400k)
Ma(r)xTutorials.zip — original "historic" version
Ma(r)xTutorials_Folder.zip — original "historic" version

I've also created a small Index of the patcher names used in the tutorial (in "pdf" format).

Electro-Acoustic Music Primer (late-2010 revision)

Electro-Acoustic Music Primer: (c. 10 MB)  a ".zip" compressed archive -- Created using Max5 from Cycling'74.

This is a "stand alone" Mac application (Windows users scroll down a further for a version you can use) designed to help teach some basic audio principles and common synthesis techniques to beginning students.  There is also a ProjectSynthPack module with some slightly more elaborate demonstration synths and audio file manglers.  Students can use them as a resource for their first electronic music mini-projects.

Windows users (or Mac users who want to or need to do it this way) should download either the full Max5 install or the free runtime version of the program from Cycling 74. Then use one of the links below. (Note to Windows users: Good luck! I have no way of doing detailed testing.  But many of my students have gotten these things to work, though, so that should give you some encouragement.)

E-A_Music Primer Collective — This link downloads a folder with a single Max "collective" patch and a couple of short audio files.  If it works, this should be a very simple solution for (hopefully most) Windows users.

E-A_MusicPrimer5Folder.zip — This link downloads a folder with all the individual modules of the Primer as separate files.  Each module could be run individually, or you can open the file named E-A_MusicPrimer.maxpat to run the programming in a manner similar to running the stand-alone Mac application.

Note: Anyone with a full copy of Max5 (either platform) can also use the link above to look "under the hood" and see everything about how all the modules work.  It's a good way to start learning how to program and create your own Max patches.

Older Stuff

Electro-Acoustic Music PrimerX
a slightly older version

PluggoVST.zip  (ca. 320k) — This file is a collection of VST plug-ins derived from the ProjectSynth module of my E-A_MusicPrimer.
Contents include the following: AdditiveSynth, FM-Synth, DeepSpace (automated sine waves), ModWheelMayhem, ModWheelScales, NoiseySynth2, PannerDeluxe, and Pierre'sPlayhouse.

NOTE: To use this set of plug-ins you need to download the free run-time version of Pluggo from the Cycling'74 site.  Then place the plugin modules in a folder named Pluggo and place that folder in the folder with your other VST plug-ins.  Then launch your VST host application.

Useful Utility Application
: a Max/MSP-based 5.1 Studio Tester
stand alone application: StudioTester.zip
simple patcher: StudioTestPatch.zip  (re-configurable if you have Max/MSP)

I designed to be useful for checking to see that all signal paths are good, that and levels and frequency, response, etc., are consistent; that all speakers are all working properly, where the sweet spot is for monitoring, etc.. Easy access to your choice of white or pink noise ... or whatever external source you want to plug in; instantly route to any combination speakers; switch speakers on and off with ease; instantly "kill" all speakers, etc..

In combination with some analysis programs, we have used it recently as a resource when checking room coloration, frequency nodes, and reverb decay.
