Biobased Polymers

Current research being conducted at our lab in the field of bio-based, biodegradable polymers includes the development of renewable, environmentally friendly blends and composites via melt blending bio-based and/or natural additives with the polymer polylactide. Natural Rubber and polymerized bio-derived oils are being pursued as options to toughen PLA and allow its use in a wider range of applications.

Projects to synthesize polymers from bio based raw materials are ongoing currently. The synthesis of polyurethanes from vegetable oils is one such ongoing project. The properties of the resulting polyurethanes based on different starting materials and polymerization processes are being studied.
