Spanish 211 requires eight hours of homework per week.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE TO COMPLETE ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS PRIOR TO THE CLASS INDICATED.

WEEK 1
Tues. 1/6
If you have not yet purchased the package of materials for this class, there are copies of the textbook and workbook on reserve in Alden Library.  You should check them out, photocopy pages for the first week of class, and purchase your own copies ASAP.  Everyone must do the homework before class and bring pages 4-10 of the text to class on the second day. 

TEXTO: 

a.  Review pp. 4-6.  You should understand all vocabulary and you should be able to answer the questions at the end of each paragraph on pp. 4-5 as well as those on p. 6 orally and in writing.  Use your dictionary if necessary.
b.  Read through activity 1-1 on p. 7 and think about how you would answer the questions.  Use your dictionary to look up any unfamiliar vocabulary.  This will prepare you for activity 1-2.
c.  Complete 1-2 on p. 7 by referring to the context of each word in boldface in "Nueva sala de charla internacional" on pp. 8-9.   You do not have to read the chat in order to determine the meaning of these words.  We will work more with the content of the chat next class.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams.
d.  Read through the grammar explanation on pp. 11-12.  You will work with the uses of SER and ESTAR throughout Unit 1.
MANUAL:
a.  Familiarize yourself with the "Guidelines for Activities Manual" on the course homepage.   You need to understand these detailed instructions before proceding.
b.  Complete exercise 1-1 on p. 2 using a variety of adjectives in the box at the top of p. 2.  Use at least 2 adjectives to describe each person or group of people.  Most of these adjectives are cognates; use your dictionary to find the meaning of any words you don't know.  We will work more with these adjectives in class and on future assignments.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams
c.  Complete 1-2 by referring to the context of each word in boldface in the "sala de charla" in the textbook. 
d.  AFTER COMPLETING THE ACTIVITIES, check answers in back and correct your errors in a different color ink according to the Manual guidelines on the course homepage.

TEXTO:
a.  Read the chat and complete 1-3 and 1-4 on p. 10.
b.  Study the grammar explanation on pp. 11-12.  Complete 1-6 using your dictionary to find the meaning of any unfamiliar vocabulary. 
c.  Read through the grammar explanation on p. 14.  We will work some with direct object pronouns in class today.
MANUAL:
a.  After completing the textbook homework, complete exercises on pp. 3-4.  Note that in 1-3, the picture and birthday do not correspond to "José" in the chat room.  Complete the exercise according to the chat room José.

a.  Study the grammar explanation on p. 14. 
b.  Complete 1-9 in writing.  Look up any unfamiliar vocabulary in your dictionary.
c.  Read p. 16 and the instructions to activities 1-11 and 1-12; we will do them, or something similar, in class.
d.  Print out and bring to class the composition instructions for Spanish 211.  We will talk briefly about the compositions in class today.  You will begin work on the first composition next week.

a.  Complete pp. 8-9 before referring to the answer key.  See "Study Tips for Writing" for help with 1-12 and "Study Tips for Listening" for help with 1-13.  Check and correct.  If your Acitivities Manual did not come packaged with a CD, you can check out a tape in the Language Resource Center (Gordy 015) containing the audio track for 1-13.

Mon. 1/12
TEXTO:
a.  Think about your home town and prepare written answers to Pablo's questions in 1-14.   Use your dictionary to find the meaning of any new vocabulary.
b.  Complete 1-15 on p. 19.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams.
c.  Read "Antes de escuchar" on p. 19 in anticipation of listening to the short lecture ("miniconferencia").  (Also see "Study Tips for Listening.")  Skim 1-16 and 1-17 to get an idea of what the lecture is about.
d.  Read through the grammar explanation on pp. 21-22.  You are responsible for memorizing the present tense conjugations of all verbs listed on these pages.
e.  Work on step 1 of the composition.  (Step 1 due Thursday.)
MANUAL:
a.  Complete 1-14 on page 10 by writing a complete sentence for each item.  Click here to print out a copy of page 10.  You may need to refer to a previous Spanish textbook or your dictionary for vocabulary related to buildings and public spaces in towns and cities.  For each activity, include the people who do it (los jóvenes, los mayores, etc.) as well as the place where they do it.
b.  Read "La guía del ocio" and complete 1-15.
c.  Check and correct.

Tues.
TEXTO:
a.  Listen to the "Miniconferencia" on the textbook CD.  (The black and red CD that came with your text.)  Follow your notes from class, which should outline the content.  We will work more with the lecture content in class.   If you purchased a used textbook without a CD, you can check out a copy of the CD in Gordy 015, the Language Resource Center.
b.  Spend a good part of your study time memorizing the verb conjugations on pp. 21-22.  Complete 1-19 and be prepared to compare your routine to Marta's orally in class.  Use your dictionary to look up the meaning of any verbs you are unfamiliar with.
c.  Complete 1-20 using your dictionary as above.
d.  Continue work on step 1 of your composition.  (Step 1 due Thursday.)

Complete 1-17 A & B on pp. 13-14.

b.  Scan the 4 narrative portraits on pp. 28-29 and the side bar on Fidel Castro in search of answers to the questions in 1-27.
c.  Read through the grammar explanation on pp. 31-32.  You should begin to memorize preterit conjugations of the verbs listed on these pages.

MANUAL:

b.  Complete 1-22 without your dictionary and simply by determining the synonym of each word from the context given.  Scan the 4 narrative portraits in the text for the information necessary to complete 1-23.

a.  Study the grammar explanation on pp. 31-32 and complete 1-30 by circling the preterit verbs in the "Botero" reading.  Continue memorizing preterit verb forms.  Your instructor or a tutor can help you devise a system.  See tutoring suggestions and policies on the course homepage.  You may need to refer to the verb tables in the appendices (pp. 397-404) for the complete preterit conjugation of irregular verbs.
b.  Complete 1-31 A, in writing, based on one of the people from the reading on pp. 28-29.  What do you imagine that person did at each of the times indicated?  We will complete 1-31 B in class.
c.  Complete step 2 of your composition and bring your "bosquejo" and your "notas" to class today.

a.  Read/Study pp. 44-45.  (See "Study Tips for Reading.")  Write an answer to the question at the end of each paragraph that also explains your response.  Be prepared to compare your answers orally to those of a classmate. 
b.  Be sure you understand all vocabulary in the questions in 2-1 on p. 46.  We will work with these questions in class.

TEXTO: 
a. If you did not do so in class, follow the instructions in "Lectura: Cuestión de familias": before reading make 4 or 5 notes about associations or commonly held generalizations regarding Hispanic families.  Read the article on pp. 47-48 and make changes to your notes to reflect reality, as suggested in 2-3 on p. 48. 
b.  Study the grammar explanation on p. 49 before completing the Manual activities.
c.  Complete steps 4 and 5 of the first composition and turn in your composition folder today with all preliminary documents.

MANUAL:

a.  Complete 2-4 through 2-6 on pp. 34-35.  Check and correct.  (Can you find the error in the answer key for 2-5?  Hint: answer key does not follow the rules for singular/plural verb forms with "se" in one example.)
b.  Complete 2-8 on p. 36.

Tues.
TEXTO: 
a.  Complete the "Crucigrama" in 2-12 on p. 54.  Refer to the box on p. 33 of the Manual for most of the vocabulary.
b.  In anticipation of this unit's "miniconferencia," complete 2-14 on p. 56.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams.
c.  Read through "Antes de Escuchar" on p. 56 and read through p. 57 in order to have an idea of the theme of the "Miniconferencia."
d.  Read through the grammar explanation on p. 58.  These rules review what you already know about preterit vs. imperfect.
e.  Thorougly memorize all preterit verb forms for today's VERB QUIZ. (By now this should be a question of simple review.)  Learn the preterit forms to all verbs on pp. 21-22 and 31.  Your instructor or the Spanish learning facilitator can help you develop a system for memorizing these forms.  See the tutoring policy on the course homepage.  You may need to refer to the verb tables in the appendices (pp. 397-404) for the complete preterit conjugation of irregular verbs.

a.  Study preterit verb forms for todays VERB QUIZ.

c.  Read the opinions of the people in 2-21, and focus on the adjectives:  "atrevidas," "lanzada," etc.  Look up any words you don't understand in your dictionary.  Make a list of the adjectives and write next to each one "hombres" or "mujeres" depending on which sex you think each adjective characterizes best.  We will work more with these adjectives in comparisons in class.

MANUAL:
a.  Write out exercise 2-19 using the comparatives you studied on pp. 60-61 in the text (mas...que, menos...que, tanto...como). (Page 41 contains the instructions and an example, but you are to write your comparisons on pp. 42-43.)
b.  Complete 2-20 and 2-21 on pp. 43-44.  In 2-21 you will once again narrate a short story in the past using the preterit and imperfect.  Be sure to consider carefully your choice of verb form. 
c.  Turn in pages 38-44.







WEEK 6

TEXTO: 
a.  For 2-25 on p. 64, make a list of three activities you do in each situation.  In class we will work with these more.

c.  Read the "lectura" on pp. 65-66 and complete 2-27 based on the information in the reading.

f.  Print out and bring to class the composition instructions for the second composition in Spanish 211.  We will talk briefly about the second composition in class today and you will begin work on it this week.

a.  Study the grammar explanation on pp. 67-68.
b.  Read through the instructions to 2-29 on p. 68 and identify the indirect object pronouns in the two passages below.  Then, instead of writing "recommendations," write four sentences describing what happens (or what doesn't happen) on the ideal date ("cita").  Use verbs such as "regalar," "comprar," "decir," "invitar," "llamar," etc., all of which take direct and/or indirect objects.

MANUAL:

a.  After studying the grammar in the textbook, complete 2-25 through 2-27 on pp. 47-48.  Check and correct.

TEXTO: 
a.  Read about Diana Paredes on p. 72, study "Tied Oranges," and write answers to the questions in 2-33.  We will compare our answers and work more with the painting in class.
b.  Complete step 1 of your composition and bring your "NOTAS" to class today.  Refer to the composition instructions for details.

 a.  Complete 2-28 and 2-29 on pp. 48-49.  Check and correct.

a.  Carefully read p. 73, which introduces the theme of the reading.
b.  Complete 2-34 by skimming each paragraph for the main idea.
c.  Complete 2-35 by studying the context of each word in the exercise.  (Determining the meaning of unknown words from their context is a crucial skill to learn in order to become a proficient reader of Spanish.)  See "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.
d.  Read the article on pp. 75-76 and complete the "Momento de reflexión" activities in the margins.
e.  Complete 2-36 by using your own words to explain each declaration.  (You can paraphrase the sentence or explain why the sentence is true.)

a.  Complete pp. 50-top of 55.  Check and correct.
b.  Turn in pp. 45-55.

TEXTO: 
a.  Read/Study the three self portraits on pp. 80-81.  Use your dictionary to determine the meaning of unknown words.  In your text, underline the sentences or parts of sentences that describe advantages of being bi-cultural.  Be prepared to tell a classmate what you underlined.
b.  Decide which statements in  3-1 on p. 82 are true (T) and which are false (F).
c.  Complete 3-2 on p. 82 by referring to the context for each word in bold face in the reading on 84-85.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams.
d.  Read the grammar explanation and begin to study the subjunctive verb forms on pp. 86-87.  The sooner you master the patterns of the subjunctive conjugations, the better.

Mon. 2/23

a.  Read "Ser hispano en Estados Unidos" pp. 84-85 and complete the "Momento de reflexión" exercises in the margins.  Complete the table in 3-3 and be prepared to compare your table with a classmate today in class.  Be sure you know the meaning of each vocabulary word in 3-4; we will work with this vocabulary in class.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.
b.  Continue to study the subjunctive verb forms on pp. 86-87.
c.  Complete step 3 of the composition and bring your "borrador" in your composition folder, along with your "notas" and "bosquejo," to class today.  Edited "borrador" and final version are due Monday, March 2.

MANUAL:
 
a.  Complete 3-3, and 3-4 on p. 63.

Tues.
TEXTO: 
a.  Work on mastering the conjugation patterns of the subjunctive on pp. 86-87.
b.  Study "Uses of the Subjunctive" on pp. 88-89.
c.  Complete 3-6 by reading the 2 letters and underlining the uses of the subjunctive in each one.  (You do not have to complete step 2, write a letter, but we will write something similar in class.)  Use your dictionary to look up unfamiliar vocabulary.
d.  Complete 3-7.  ¡Ojo!  Some of the verbs take the subjunctive and others take the indicative.
e.  Complete 3-8 by writing answers that contain both an independent and a dependent clause.  Note that in #2 the "quinceañera" is a girl's 15th birthday, an important rite of passage in Mexican culture, and the "santo" in #4 is a person's "saint's day," the calendar date when Hispanic cultures recognize the saint an individual was named for.  In other words, if your name is Juan, you celebrate your "santo" on June 25th, el día de San Juan.  Use your dictionary as above.

MANUAL:
a.  Complete 3-5, 3-6, and 3-7.  Note that the answer key for 3-6 erroneously places "negar que" in the "certeza" column.

TEXTO: 
a.  Be sure you have mastered the conjugation patterns of the subjunctive for today's VERB QUIZ.
b.  Study the expressions in ¿Cómo lo dices?" on p. 92.  Prepare 3-11 by looking up any unfamiliar words from the instructions in your dictionary and writing one opinion/reaction to each of the new requirements.  Use sentences with both independent and dependent clauses to express your reactions.
c.  Work on steps 4 and 5 of the composition.

MANUAL:
a.  Complete 3-8 A and B.  In section A you're supposed to make assumptions (stereotypes) about these creatures' abilities, disabilities, habits and customs based on the way they look.  Be creative and have some fun.  Complete 3-9, 3-10, and the listening comprehension activity 3-11.    Consult the "Guidelines for Activities Manual" on the course homepage
b.  Turn in pages 61-68.

TEXTO:

b.  Read "antes de escuchar" on 96 in preparation for listening to Unit 3's "Miniconferencia."

TEXTO: 
a.  Listen to the "Miniconferencia" on the textbook CD.  (The black and red CD that came with your text.)  We will work more with the lecture's content in class.  If you purchased a used textbook without a CD, you can check out a copy of the CD in Gordy 015, the Language Resource Center.
b.  Study the grammar explanation on p. 98 and complete 3-17.  First, be sure you understand the instructions; use your dictionary if necessary.  Then, read the three opinion paragraphs and identify all "emotions."  Are all emotion sentences expressed with the subjunctive?  Are there examples of opinions that use other types of structures?  You will compare your list of emotions/opinions with a classmate's today in class.  Finally, write a short paragraph that expresses your reaction to Proposition 227.  You can model your opinions on those sentences you identified earlier. 
c.  Read and make sure you understand the instructions to 3-19.  Then, write out 5 short sentences, using the "tú" form of the verb, that describe unpleasant roommate behaviors.  These sentences should consist of one single clause (one verb).  (Example:  "Tocas la música demasiado fuerte").  We will work with these in class.
d.  Complete steps 4 and 5 of the second composition and turn in your composition folder today.

MANUAL:
a.  Complete 3-15 and 3-16.  Check and correct.
 

Tues.
TEXTO: 
a.  Read "Curiosidades" on p. 103 and match the Spanish to the English "préstamo léxico" at the bottom of the page.

MANUAL:

a.  Complete 3-17.  Note that the 4 people identified are the subjects of the principle verbs in your answer (i.e., for #1 you would write something like "La mujer hispana detesta que... (and then tell what she detests)".  In the last picture, the "mujer hispana" is using the English word "citizen" instead of the Spanish "ciudadana."  For #4, give your reaction to the events in the pictures.
b.  Complete 3-18 by writing three sentences (you are giving your reaction to Carlos's opinions).
c.  Turn in pages 69-73. 
d.  Click here for a copy of p. 74, which you will need to complete the next assignment.

Thurs.
TEXTO: 
a.  Complete 3-23 in writing by looking over the reading on p. 106. 
b.  Complete the vocabulary exercise 3-24 by studying the context of each word underlined in the readings on pp. 105-107.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams.
c.  Read p. 105 carefully and then scan p.106 in search of answers to the questions in 3-25.  Then read the article (letter) that Santiago recommended to Marta.  We will work more with the letter in class.
d.  Now go back to the first question on p. 104 and expand or correct your original definition of "espanglish."

a.  Complete 3-19, 3-20, 3-21, and 3-22.  For 3-19 and 3-20, consider each word in context from the textbook reading.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  For 3-21, see the reading on p. 105 of the text for at least one argument in favor and one against.  For 3-22, try to think of at least one synonym of "recomendar," or find one in Xosé's letter in the textbook.  (There are also examples in 3-23 below.)  Click here for a copy of p. 74, which you will need to complete today's assignment.

TEXTO:
a.  Study the grammar explanation on pp. 108-109.  Complete 3-27 by checking the appropriate space ("lo hago" or "no lo hago").  We will work more with your checks in class.  Complete 3-28.  Note that the verb in the independent clause will be in the "yo" form (the professor is speaking) and the verb in the dependent clause will be in the "tú" form (he is speaking to Marta).
b.  Read the instructions and the e-mail in 3-29 and be sure you understand everything.  We will work with this in class.

MANUAL:
a.  Complete 3-25 on p. 76.  Note that not all verbs require the subjunctive.
b.  Complete 3-26 with at least 3 recommendations in response to the e-mail in 3-25.

Mon. 3/9
TEXTO: 
a.  Read/study "Color y forma" on p. 113.  Complete 3-33 by first, for #1,  identifying as many elements as you can in the mural and then, for #2, trying to associate a meaning with one of the elements or with the sum of the elements. 
b.  Prepare for discussion:  Do you agree with the book when it identifies the theme of the mural as "los años 50"?  Are there elements represented in the mural whose meaning you do not understand?  Which ones?  Be prepared to ask about them in Spanish in class.  (Find the Spanish words for the mural's elements in your dictionary.)

MANUAL:

a.  Complete 3-27 keeping in mind "Study Tips for Listening".

TEXTO: 
a.  Read "Las pistas visuales" on p. 114 and underline the types of visual clues mentioned.  Use your dictionary, if necessary.  Then, identify examples of each type in the pamphlet on pp. 116-117.
b.  Complete 3-34 based on the illustrations and complete 3-35 based on your personal experience. 
c.  Complete 3-36 by locating the context of each term or phrase in the pamphlet.  For tips on how to learn vocabulary, see "A Note on Vocabulary Acquisition" on the course homepage.  In order to understand how vocabulary will be tested on exams, see review sheets for exams.
d.  Read the "folleto" in search of answers to the questions in 3-37.
