The IETF was formed on January 16, 1986, and is mainly comprised of engineers who specialize in networking protocols and software applications. Furthermore, these professionals are generally equipped with a basic working knowledge of networking hardware. This organization contibutes to the Internet by creating and encouraging various Internet standards in addition to working with other organizations such as W3C and ISO/IEC. The IETF is an open standards organization which doesn’t have a formal membership process or any specific membership requirements.
