17th-Century French Literature
Course Description:
This course will examine French Literature
of the seventeenth century. We will study authors such as Pascal,
La Rochefoucauld, Mme de Lafayette, La Fontaine, and La Bruyère.
Our focus will be on the relationship between literary themes and structures
along with placing those relationships into historical and cultural context.
Class discussions and lectures will consist of detailed exegesis of the
works, and synthetic contextualization. The course is conducted in
French. Grades will be based on participation in classroom discussions,
two short papers (2 pages for undergraduates, 3 pages for graduates), and
a final paper (6-7 pages for undergraduates, 9-10 pages for graduates).
