I am a USA/IATSE Local 829 Costume designer and an associate professor of costume design at Ohio University. As a theater costume designer I have designed for a variety of regional theaters across the country (including the Cincinnati Playhouse, the Steppenwolf Theater, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the Virginia Museum Theater, and the GEVA theater among others), off-Broadway for the Chelsea Theater Center and Lincoln Center Institute, and for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College. I've won Helen Hayes and Denver Critics Circle regional design awards for my work at the Folger Theater and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and exhibited design work at the Prague Quadrennial Design Exhibition and OISTT's World Stage Design. For USITT I run the Young Designers Forum and have mounted three different costume symposiums in New York city focused on Broadway resources and production techniques; and for USITT, SETC, and the National Portfolio Review at Lincoln Center I regularly review student portfolios for the professional theater and film markets. For the film and television industry I have co-authored with film designer Kristin Burke COSTUMING FOR FILM: THE ART AND THE CRAFT, published in 2005 by the Silman-James Press. The book focuses on the process of film costuming from script breakdown through working on set and entering the job market. Deborah Nadoolman Landis, costume designer for COMING TO AMERICA, THE BLUES BROTHERS, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and president of the film Costume Designers Guild, Local 892 has stated, "With a wealth of experience and single-minded dedication, Burke and Cole have assembled the first-ever complete text on the process of costume design for the movies - from script to screen. COSTUMING FOR FILM fills a void...This wonderful volumne shows exactly how we do it." I have also built costumes for a variety of feature films and worked as a set costumer on GOING ALL THE WAY with Ben Affleck. (Teaching Portfolio)

I love costume craft work as well as designing and I am currently working on a new book with my OU costume colleagues David Russell and Kjersten Lester-Moratzka focused on designing and creating animal costumes using some of the techniques I learned working at the Muppets. As a crafts artisan and costume technologist I have built costumes and craft pieces for regional theater, Broadway, and opera companies including: Jim Henson's Muppets, the Ringling Brothers Circus, the Metropolitan Opera, the Folger Theater, the Pioneer Theater, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the Juilliard School, Radio City Music Hall, a dozen different Broadway productions and a variety of costume studios in the New York city area.
