Field trip to New York

This trip is not a requirement to fulfill the class requirements. However, it is a fantastic opportunity and a major competitive edge Ohio University has over most other design education institutes. Each students has the opportunity to interview with a principal from the top design firms in a major design center. The studios are diverse, included are top corporate design firms as well as small two person design shops in walk-up buildings. This provides a spectrum of placement possibilities. Testimonials from previous students are available upon request. The trip is usually conducted over Spring Break which is in the middle of March. Which means two things: no Spring Break costs, and those costs you do incur are tax deductible as job search or educational costs. So, keep all your receipts!

After we secure the confirmations from the studios, a handout will be created to define details. 5 pieces +/- is all that is required to be finished for the books we take with us.

Field trip Coordinator and Assistants are needed in coordinating the trip, and follow-up Thank You letters will be written by those interviewed by the design firm.

Major Considerations:

Costs will run around seven hundred dollars.
Five pieces must be in the book.
All interview rehearsals completed.

Things to keep in mind:

Please be considerate, it is difficult enough to navigate a city alone. However, with 16+ variables, I will be burdened with anxiety, even if you aren't. Thank you for following these requests:
. be punctual, we should only enter the host design firms together, stragglers can catch-up at the next location
. inform me of any deviations to the agenda
. no hangovers, or sleeping during studio presentations
. prepare intelligent questions, let's make a list!
. wear comfortable shoes, we will be doing a lot of walking
. be prepared for rain
. business casual is being recommended, no blue jeans w/holes, 100% cotton, guys: loose fitting jacket, J.Crew sensible, women: packing/travel savvy stuff, dark colors. In general appear to be street wise!
. Bars can be expensive, $4+ a beer!
. Tips are 15%, when figuring out how much you owe on a bill made out for the table just add 25¢ per $1. This will cover tax and tip.
. If you are not street savvy, don't talk to the street people, it could get ugly!
