"La Isla del Encanto"

Without a doubt, my favorite place in the world is the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. During my Junior year of high school, I was given the opportunity to travel with my Spanish IV class to Puerto Rico. There was no way that I was going to turn down such an incredible opportunity. When I arrived to the island, it was love at first sight. Everything is so beautiful there! There are palm trees and the most beautiful tropical flowers everywhere you look. As the week progressed, I noticed that everyone that I met in Puerto Rico was so genuinely friendly and they wanted to teach you about their culture. They are so proud of their heritage and have a love for their country like nowhere else that I have ever been. To this day I still miss the people of Puerto Rico and their incredibly friendly personalities.

Here are a few of the places that I was lucky enough to visit:

El Yunque

El Yunque National Forest

  • El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the United States
  • The forest covers 28,000 acres
  • Average temperature is 73°F
  • Receives around 200 inches of rain per year
  • Is home to hundreds of different plant species

Restaurant Barrachina

  • Located in Old San Juan on Calle Fortaleza
  • Serves traditional Puerto Rican cuisine
  • Birthplace of the Piña Colada, created by Don Ramón in 1963

Parque de Bombas

Parque de Bombas de Ponce

  • Located in Ponce
  • Built in 1882 for the Exhibition Trade Fair
  • Designed by Lt. Col. Maximo Meana
  • Became Ponce's official firehouse in 1885
  • Functioned as a firehouse for 100 years
  • Now a museum that memorializes Ponce's firemen
