Practice and Experimentation

When the final segment of the seminar is over, the instructor will tell you how much time you have to experiment with your demoX account. If you have not already done so, you should configure the browser you will use for CommonSpot work, as previously discussed:

To reduce the risk of compromising your personal computer's security that would from having cookies and scripting generally enabled in order to work with CommonSpot, we suggest that you follow the separate instructions for configuring Internet Explorer, or for configuring Firefox. If you can configure your pop-up blocker to trust certain servers, then the list of servers that the pop-up blocker must trust is the same as that given for IE or Firefox to trust in the above-linked pages.

Please feel free to re-rehearse the various activities from the seminar, and to work you way through any items of interest that were skipped over.

Post-Seminar Housekeeping

Before that experimental learning time has elapsed, you may want to clean up after yourself; if you encounter any difficulties with the following steps, please contact the instructor.

  1. Click on the "Page & Template Management" icon to display the menu, and choose "My Pages" from the menu.

  2. Click on the plus [+] sign to the left of each folder icon that has a plus [+] sign (likely "My Pages", "My Templates", and "My Documents) to expand those lists.

  3. Click in the check-box for every page, template, and document that you created or uploaded during the seminar (that is, not the home page, "/demoX/index.cfm").

  4. Click on the button toward the lower-right marked "Delete selected pages..."

  5. Double-check the list of pages, templates, and documents to be deleted, and click on "OK" if it is correct.

  6. Navigate to your demo subsite's home page.

  7. Type "admin.cfm" into the location box, instead of your home page's filename, and press return.

  8. Click on the plus sign next to subsites to drop down the list, and click on the "X" icon to the right of each sub-subsite you created.

  9. Select "delete the subsite" in the resulting dialog box and click on "OK."

  10. Click on "delete the subsite" in the confirmation dialog box, and then click on "done" to return to the subsite administration page.

  11. Go to your demoX subsite's home page.

  12. Click on the "Knowledge Maps" icon to display the menu, and choose "Image Gallery" from the menu.

  13. If the "My Images" category contains any images, click on the "show images" button for that category. In the resulting display, for each image, click on the "X" icon below the image to delete it. Confirm each deletion. If the browser complains, click on the "Refresh" button.

  14. When there are no more images, click on the "Close" button.

  15. Once you have removed all the images that you uploaded, you have finished the housekeeping exercise and should quit from the browser, closing all the browser's windows.

Getting to Work

Now that you know how to work in CommonSpot, it is time for content contributors to contact their pagemasters, and for pagemasters to request the creation and activation of the real subsite. Send an E-mail to webteam@ohio.edu giving the full URL of the home page of your current site, and requesting that a CommonSpot subsite be set up for you to migrate into.
