    ED NEWMAN, grounds, recycling and refuse, was quoted in the August 2006 edition of Campus Planning & Management regarding his role in the launch of RecycleMania in 2001 and his involvement in the program today.

Awards

    HELMUT PASCHOLD, health sciences, was among eight individuals presented with a prestigious American Society of Safety Engineers Award for his ongoing contributions to his region, chapter, the society and his commitment to protecting people, property and the environment. The recipients were recognized at their annual professional development conference.

    CHRISTOPHER CASSLE, environmental resources management, and ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological sciences, with R.L. Martino of Marshall University, gave their presentation on "Spirorbis as an indicator of marine influence in Pennsylvanian cyclothems" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological sciences, along with B.M. Blake of the West Virginia Economic Geological Survey, R.L. Martino of Marshall University and C.F. Eble of the Kentucky Geological Survey, gave their presentation on the "Stratigraphy and Depositional Framework of the Two Mile Limestone (Late Pennsylvanian) of West Virginia" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological science, GAR ROTHEWELL, professor environmental and plant biology, presented their work with coauthors Ruth Stockey of the University of Alberta and Darren Grocke of McMaster University, titled the "Diagenetic Model for Early Carbonate Cementation of Nearshore Marine Sands" at the International Association of Sedimentologists in Fukoka, Japan, in August 2006.

    ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological sciences, presented the work of her and her coauthors CHRISTOPHER CASSLE, environmental resources management, and Ronald Matino of Marshall University, titled "Microconchus (Spirobis) and Carbonate Textures: Recognition of Coastal Transitions in Pennsylvanian Cyclothems" at the International Association of Sedimentologists in Fukoka, Japan, in August 2006.

    ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological sciences, presented the work of her and her coauthors Andrew Johnson of Northwestern University, Joel Blum of the University of Michigan and Blas Valero Garces of CSIC Spain, titled "Carbonates in Provenance Studies" at the International Association of Sedimentologists in Fukoka, Japan in August 2006.

    DANIEL HEMBREE, post-doctoral fellow and geological sciences, GREGORY NADON, associate professor of geological sciences, and ALYCIA STIGALL, assistant professor of geological sciences, gave their presentation "Linking Middle to Late Pennsylvanian climate change to variations in ichnofauna and pedogenic development in floodplain and lacustrine paleoenvironments of the Appalachian basin" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    KWARTENG AMANING, graduate student, and DINA LOPEZ, associate professor of geological sciences, gave their presentation "Chemical nutrients in steams of the Western Allegheny Plateau ecoregion with good biological indexes for aquatic life" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    WILLIAM CARLSON, graduate student, and MARY STOERTZ, associate professor of geological sciences, presented "Hydrologic controls on fish and macroinvertebrate communities in Ohio's Western Allegheny Plateau" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    CAROL HOLLENKAMP, graduate student, DINA LOPEZ, associate professor of geological sciences, and ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological sciences, presented the "Effect of increasing alkalinity and pH in the distribution coefficients of heavy metals between sediments and pore water in a lake affected by acid mine drainage" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    ALYCIA STIGALL, assistant professor of geological sciences, and BRANDON KLINGENSMITH, graduate student, gave their presentation on the "GIS-based mapping of brachiopod ranges in the Type Cincinnatian" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    GREGORY NADON, associate professor of geological sciences, and KELSEY MCNAMARA, undergraduate student, gave their presentation on the "Tectonic control on sequence architecture and preservation between the Pine Creek and Skelley Limestones (Upper Pennsylvanian), southeast Ohio" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    SAUNIA WITHERS, undergraduate student, and JULIE LIBARKIN, geological sciences, along with C. N. Garzione of the University of Rochester, B.J. MacFadden of the Florida Museum of Natural History, gave their presentation on the "Magnetostratigraphy of the Corque Syncline, Bolivia" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    ELIZABETH GIERLOWSKI-KORDESCH, associate professor of geological sciences, along with L.E. Park of the University of Akron, gave their presentation on "How lakes got their faunas: the initiation and development of Paleozoic lake faunas" at the Geological Society of America's North-Central Section Meeting at the University of Akron in April 2006.

    KITTY CONSOLO, health and human services, Ohio University-Zanesville, gave a presentation that included two speeches, titled: "Running and Winning the Race of Life" and "Maximizing Peak Performance on Race Day" at The North East Running Club in Willoughby, Ohio.

    NORMAN GODA, associate professor of history, discussed records showing how former Nazi SS intelligence officer Heinz Felfe, who was recruited by the Soviet KGB after the war, was able to join the West German intelligence service set up by the United States on CNN. 

    DIANE TOMLIN, early language and literacy specialist, Ohio University-Chillicothe, presented a poster session on Language and Literacy Environments at the annual meeting of Ohio's Reading First Initiative in Columbus. The workshop was supported by the Ohio Board of Regents and the Office of Early Childhood and School Readiness.

    JOHN BROBST, associate professor of history, spoke at a conference on "A Strained Partnership: European-American Relations and the Middle East from Suez to Iraq" in Zurich, Switzerland. The conference was hosted by the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at Switzerland's distinguished Federal Institute of Technology. 

    PAUL BOSSCHER, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, presented the work of himself and his colleagues, ROBERT L. WILLIAMS II, professor of mechanical engineering, and LINDSEY SEBASTIAN BRYSON, former assistant professor of mechanical engineering, titled "Cable-Suspended Robotic Contour Crafting System" at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) International Design Technical Conferences, 30th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference in Philadelphia in September 2006.

    ROBERT L. WILLIAMS II, professor of mechanical engineering, presented the work of himself and his colleagues, VENKAT CHADARAM, graduate student, and Federica Giacometti, student of the University of Padova, Italy, titled "Three-Cable Haptic Interface" at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) International Design Technical Conferences, 30th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference in Philadelphia in September 2006.

Recognitions

    JEAN ANDREWS, psychology, produced a documentary video titled "A Forest Returns: The Success Story of Ohio's Only National Forest as told by Ora E. Anderson," and received the 2006 Publication Award from the Environmental Education Council of Ohio.

    GARY NEIMAN, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, was recently elected to a two-year term as treasurer of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP).
