Publications PHYLLIS BERNT, professor of communication systems management, and chair of faculty senate, co-authored the book titled, "Shaping American Telecommunication: A History of Technology, Policy, and Economics," which was published Nov. 30, 2005 by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. G. DANIEL LASSITER, professor of psychology, edited a book titled, "Interrogations, Confessions, and Entrapment," which received excellent reviews in Applied Cognitive Psychology, Vol. 20: 131-138 (2006). KEVIN MATTSON, professor of contemporary history, will publish his new book in April titled, "Upton Sinclair and the Other American Century," published by John Wiley and Sons Inc. The book depicts acclaimed writer Upton Sinclair, author of "The Jungle," and his efforts to expose the socio-economic imbalances caused by unregulated capitalism during the industrial revolution. MARK SHATZ, professor of psychology at Ohio University Zanesville, and MEL HELITZER, professor of journalism, had their work titled "Comedy Writing Secrets" published in Writer's Digest, Fall 2005. Presentations MARK SHATZ, professor of psychology at Ohio University Zanesville, presented "Using Stand Up Comedy Principles to Punch Up Humor Writing," at the Erma Bombeck Writers' Conference in Dayton, Ohio, in March. ANITA LOUISE STEELE, director of the music therapy department, has been invited by the Canadian Music Therapy Association to present the results of a research study, "The Use of a Reading Enhanced Music Curriculum to Increase Reading Scores of Children in Rural Appalachia," to its annual conference, May 3, University of Windsor, Windsor, Canada. ANITA LOUISE STEELE, director of the music therapy department, and KENNA HUDGINS, graduate student, presented "The Effects of a Reading Enhanced Music Program on Reading Scores of Children in Rural Appalachia," for the Great Lakes Region of the American Music Therapy Association in Detroit, Michigan, in March. SHANE TILTON, instructor of electronic media at Ohio University-Zanesville, presented "The Chilling Effect on Digital Development: Us vs. ElcomSoft" at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference, held at Bowling Green University. Recognitions JOAN CONNOR, associate professor and director of creative writing, won the River Teeth Award in nonfiction for her new essay collection titled "The World Before Mirrors." This collection makes her fourth book and will come out this spring. LENA WRIGHT MYERS, professor of sociology received the Marguerite Rogers Howie distinguished service award, in recognition of her contribution to the Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists, Inc., at its 71st annual conference, on March 9. DANIEL PHILLIPS, professor of physics and Astronomy, had his work titled "Chiral Perturbation Theory for Electroweak Reactions on Deuterium" named a "Research Highlight" by the Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics, a British Institute of Physics Journal. ROBERT SHELLY, professor of sociology and anthropology, was elected president-elect of the North Central Sociological Association for 2006-2007. He will serve as president elect for one year, and then serve as president in 2007-2008. A member since 1971, Shelly also served as the editor of the professional society's journal, Sociological Focus.
