Compiled by Natalie Smith Here's a look at recent accomplishments of Ohio University faculty and staff.
Recognitions WILLIAM KLINE, counseling and higher education, recently took over editorship of Counselor Education and Supervision. He will serve a three-year term; KLINE received the Eminent Career Award for 2003 from the Association for Specialists in Group Work.  | Zakes Mda | ZAKES MDA, English, has won the first prize in the 2003 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for his book "The Heart of Redness" published by Farrar Straus Giroux. The prize of $10,000 and a statuette was awarded at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., October 2003.
TED ROSS, Telecommunications Center, received the Directors Award of Excellence. The award is presented quarterly by Director Carolyn Lewis to a staff member at WOUB Radio and Television who contributes to the work environment with a positive attitude, consistently strives for excellence in his or her work, and provides excellent customer service. Ross has been working at the Telecommunications Center since March 2002.

AMANDA KONRADI, Sociology and Anthropology, wrote "Reading Between the Lines: Toward an Understanding of Current Social Problems, Third Edition," released in August 2003; KONDRADI wrote "A Strategy for Increasing Postrape Medical Care and Forensic Examination ? Marketing Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners to the College Population" in Violence Against Women, Vol. 9, in August 2003. WILLIAM KLINE, counseling and higher education, wrote "Identity Development in Counselors-in-Training," in Counselor Education and Supervision, Vol. 43, in 2003. TRACY LEINBAUGH, counseling and higher education, wrote "Factors Impacting Counselor Educators' Subjective Sense of Well-being," in Counselor Education and Supervision, Vol. 43, in 2003. TOM DAVIS, counseling and higher education, wrote two book chapters, "The Doctorate in Counselor Education: Implications for Leadership" co-authored with Susan Jones Sears and "George E. Hill" co-authored with J. Melvin Witmer. The chapters appeared in "Leaders and Legacies: Contributions to the Profession of Counseling" by Brunner-Routledge; DAVIS wrote the book chapter "Confidentiality and the School Counselor" in "Ethical and Legal Issues in School Counseling" by T. Remley, M. Hermann and Wayne Huey, published in 2003. DAVID KIDDER, geological sciences, wrote "Elemental Mobility in Phosphatic Shales During Concretion Growth and Implications for Provenance Analysis" in Chemical Geology, Vol. 198, in August 2003. DAMIAN NANCE, geological sciences, and Brendan Murphy, professor at St. Francis Xavier University, co-wrote "Do Supercontinents Introvert or Extrovert?: Sm-Nd Isotope Evidence" in Geology in October 2003. DANIEL TORRES, Modern Languages, wrote "Word and Flesh in Latin American Homoerotic Poetry" in "That Obscure Object of Desire: Homosexual Representations in Hispanic Culture" in 2003.
Presentations ANDREA BAKER, Sociology-Lancaster campus, presented "Ethical Issues in Researching Online Communities and Relationships" for a panel on Internet Research Methodologies at Toronto, Canada, in fall 2003.  | Valerie Conley | VALERIE CONLEY, counseling and higher education, presented "Career Paths of Older Faculty" at the European Association for Institutional Research in Limerick, Ireland, in August 2003.
LARRY JAGEMAN, teacher education, presented at the Differentiated Instruction: Theory into Practice Conference held in Cleveland in July 2003. WILLIAM KLINE, counseling and higher education, presented "Publishing in ACA Refereed Journals: Suggestions from the Council of Editors" and "Group Members' Relationships: Exploratory Research" at the American Counseling Association in Anaheim, Calif., last spring. NAJEE MUHAMMAD, educational studies, presented research on Malcolm X to the Malcolm X Project staff at Columbia University in fall 2003. TOM DAVIS, counseling and higher education, presented "Factors Related to Promotion and Tenure Decision in CACREEP Programs" at the American Counseling Association's annual convention in Anaheim, Calif., in spring 2003; DAVIS presented "Preparing School Counselors as Supervisors and Mentors" at the OACES Supervision Summit in Columbus in April 2003. TERRY CONRY, Facilities Management, presented "Collective Bargaining in Higher Education" to the Institute for Higher Education Facilities Officers in Palm Springs in September 2003. DAMIAN NANCE, geological sciences, and Duncan Keppie, professor at UNAM, presented "The Acatlan Complex, Southern Mexico: Record of the Closure of the Rheic Ocean?" to the Australian Geological Society in Kalbarri, Western Australia in September 2003; NANCE and Brendan Murphy, professor at St. Francis Xavier University, presented "Mountains, Mantle Plumes, Lithospheric Generation in Pantalassa-type Oceans and Models for the Origin of Supercontinents" to the Geological Society of Australia in Kalbarri, Western Australia in September 2003. SERGIO LOPEZ-PERMOUTH, mathematics, and HAI Q. DINH presented "Finite Rings Characterized by the Equivalence of their Codes" at the 15th Latin American Algebra Colloquium in Cocoyoc (Morelos), Mexico in June 2003. LEON ANDERSON, sociology and anthropology, presented "Skydivers over Sixty" and "Pieces of Eight: Edgework Among the Aging and the Maimed" to the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction in Atlanta, Ga. in August 2003. RICK SHRIVER, communication-Zanesville, presented "Country Report: A Look at Current Trends in Electronic Media Education in the U.S." to the International Conference on Media Education and Training in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2003.
TERRY HOGAN, Dean of Students, was invited to chair a panel of senior student affairs officers on the state of fraternity and sorority life on American college and university campuses. The panel took place at the 2003 National Panhellenic Conference Biennial Session in Palm Springs, Calif., in October 2003. HOWARD DEWALD and MINGMING XU, chemistry and biochemistry, presented "Chronoamperometric Studies of Copper and Graphite-Coated Copper Foil Electrodes in Nonaqueous Media" to The Electrochemical Society in Orlando, Fla., in October 2003.
