ATHENS, Ohio (March 12, 2004) -- A campus-wide power outage has been scheduled on the Ohio University Athens campus from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 20, in order to commission a newly installed 69 KV substation. This commissioning process allows the university to confirm the correct operation of the new equipment before agreeing to the final acceptance of the contractor's work.
Over the past two years, Ohio University has renovated its 69KV substation allowing the university to buy high voltage electricity at a significantly lower cost from American Electric Power. The university takes the purchased electricity, steps down the voltage, and then distributes the electricity across campus on its own grid. The new substation provides for complete redundancy of the transformers (meaning if one transformer is lost, another one is in place to pick up the load and continue power), as well as future growth in demand for electricity.
According to Ted Fares, Facilities Management’s director of Engineering and Technical Support, the outage will be rescheduled to either March 27 or April 3 if extreme cold weather is encountered. The university community will be notified if rescheduling becomes necessary. During the power outage, only the buildings listed below will have normal power. All other buildings on campus will be without power during the outage (including the Ohio University Inn, the Athena Theater and the Ridges). Emergency power will be provided in the buildings that are equipped with existing emergency systems.
Buildings and areas with normal power during the electrical outage:
- Research Park (West Union Street)
- Bush Airport
- Library Annex
- Visitor's Center
- Konneker Alumni Center
- Pilcher House
- Claire Ping Cottage
- Mill Street Apartments
- Intramural Fields
- The Oasis
- The Renovation Apartment
- HDL Center
- Radio Transmitter
- 66 Elmwood
All other buidlings on campus will be without power during the outage.
*This power outage will also affect the OU Inn, Athena Theater and the Ridges.
