Patricia Weitsman shares insights with media outlets

Several news outlets, including Ohio News Network radio, recently interviewed Ohio University Professor of Political Science Patricia Weitsman for her insights on the apparent motives behind North Korea's provocative missile tests and how the United States should respond. Weitsman is an expert in international security and has held fellowships at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

As Weitsman notes, the key is deescalating the cycle of insecurity that has caused this dangerous situation to reach this point.

"North Korea is signaling its resolve in advancing its nuclear capability. It is classic brinkmanship strategy," Weitsman said. "Strategic interaction here is key: as one side feels threatened, it makes more threats against the other. Continuing the spiral of hostility is not likely to be productive. A combination of positive and negative inducements is necessary right now."

Weitsman is the author of the book, "Dangerous Alliances: Proponents of Peace, Weapons of War"; co-editor of two books, "Enforcing Cooperation: 'Risky States' and Intergovernmental Management of Conflict" and "Towards a New Europe"; and co-author of "The Politics of Policy Making in Defense and Foreign Affairs."
