Ohio University's Bird Arena will soon be the home of the Ohio Valley Ice Cats, a new minor league hockey team, scheduled to open their season Dec. 6. The Ice Cats will join seven teams in the International Independent Hockey League (IIHL).
"Athens is a hockey town and minor league sports can be a fun night out for families and young people. We want to get our players out in the community and in schools to turn young kids on to hockey and our players as role models," said IIHL League President Mike Killbreath.
According to Killbreath, Americans only comprise 8 to 9 percent of the National Hockey League, with the majority of players being from Canada and Europe.
"It's difficult for American hockey players and we may be able to give guys who are hungry and want to make it a shot at going pro," Killbreath said.
The support of Ohio University hockey and youth hockey contributed to the selection of Athens as the home of the Ice Cats. Not only do the Ice Cats hope to provide another entertainment option for the surrounding Athens area, but the organization also plans to help in the development of youth hockey.
Family Advantage Marketing, a Florida based sports consulting group, holds the majority ownership of the Ohio Valley Ice Cats. Additionally, two local partners are expected to finalize agreements soon.
According to Marcus Marazon, Bird Arena assistant director, no renovations are planned for the arena.
The Ohio Valley Ice Cats will play 20 home games this season. Ticket prices for regular student bleacher seats are $6, regular Gang Green student tickets are $5 and regular adult tickets are $7.50. Various ticket packages are also available.
