  • 'The Tragedy of Untreated Pain' conference to be held Sept. 26 [OU-COM] 9/25/2006

  • A conference to be held Tuesday, Sept. 26, will address the issues surrounding the treatment of chronic, unremitting pain, specifically treatments using narcotic medication. The Ohio University conference, “The Tragedy of Untreated Pain,” will take place at the Walter Hall Rotunda, and brings together physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, psychologists and other health-care professionals who deal with the treatment of chronic pain.

  • Ohio University's Administrative Senate met on Sept. 21 for the first time this quarter to learn about employee assistance and organizational development.
     
  • WOUB to dedicate new digital master control [WOUB] 9/25/2006

  • The WOUB Center for Public Media will dedicate its new digital master control on Friday, September 29, at 3 p.m. The dedication will take place on the 6th floor of the Radio, Television, Communication (RTVC) Building, 9 South College Street, on the campus of Ohio University in Athens. Tours of the new facility will be offered from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The public is invited.
     
  • Kentucky middle school students view live surgery at Ohio University-Southern 9/25/2006

  • Middle school students from Russell, Ky., took a field trip to Ohio University Southern Campus on Sept. 20 to view a live knee surgery through a videoconference, courtesy of COSI Columbus.

Mark Tomasik, editor of the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, and Peter Copeland, editor and general manager of the Scripps Howard News Service, outdid themselves during their session, "What I Wish I Knew Then: Steps that must be Taken Early in your Career."

  • COMCorps and Ohio Athletics sponsor Red Cross blood drive Sept. 26 and 27 9/21/2006

  • COMCorps, an AmeriCorps program, and Ohio Athletics are sponsoring a Red Cross "Welcome Back" Blood Drive that will be held Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The goal of the drive is to collect a minimum of 125 units of blood each day.
     
  • McDavis looks to year ahead 9/21/2006

  • Ohio University has three new sets of goals for the upcoming year, President Roderick McDavis said at a Sept. 20 meeting with local media. The goals were developed in partnership with faculty leadership, student leadership and as part of the strategic planning process.

  • Total enrollment is expected to be 20,214 students, similar to last fall quarter's total of 20,295 students. The first-year class numbers 4,094 students, within range of the goal of 4,100 new students.

  • Beginning this fall, Ohio University students will have a new pair of well-trained eyes looking out for their safety. Michael Martinsen, who has worked for the Hamilton City Police Department since 1990 and has served as lieutenant and patrol shift commander since 1999, has been named director of campus safety and chief of the Ohio University Police Department, effective Sept. 25.

  • Ohio University MFA film student Matthew Kraus has won first prize in the Mion Solutions Environmental Film Awards program for his short documentary, "Farming for the Future." The award includes a $10,000 prize.

  • Dan Evans, dean of Ohio University Southern, has been appointed executive dean for regional campuses for the Office of University Outreach and Regional Campuses. In this role, Evans will serve as the chief operating officer for regional campuses.

  • Ohio University learning communities growing 9/11/2006

  • Learning communities began as a pilot program at Ohio University with two communities and 40 students in fall of 1999. The program - which places as many as 25 freshmen in two or three classes together in fall quarter - has grown over seven years and will comprise more than 55 communities and 1,050 participants this fall.

  • Nanoscientists have transformed a molecule of chlorophyll-a from spinach into a complex biological switch that has possible future applications for green energy, technology and medicine. Ohio University physicists Saw-Wai Hla and Violeta Iancu detailed the findings in today's early edition of the journal 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.'

  • Viewers with set-top digital receivers or compatible televisions will have more services from which to choose on WOUB-DT 27 and WOUC-DT 35 beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5. There will be four new choices to channel 27 and four new choices to channel 35. The increase in channels is due to the ongoing conversion from analog broadcast to digital broadcast.

  • Honors tutorial students become research apprentices to faculty 9/1/2006

  • Summertime for college sophomores usually means working to earn money for next year's tuition. For Molly Semones, a sophomore Honors Tutorial College chemistry and biology major from Kettering, Ohio, this summer was no different. Except that she won a research apprenticeship from HTC, which allowed her a rare opportunity for an undergraduate: paid research work in a plant biology lab on the Ohio University campus.
