  • HTC Seminar challenges students to develop intellect, community 11/28/2006

  • At 7:10 p.m. every Tuesday night this past fall quarter, the scene in Bentley Hall 306 looked like the typical beginning of a 100-level survey course: cell phones were turned off, iPods were stuffed into backpacks, last minute conversations were wrapped up, all while the instructor at the front of the class vied for everyone's attention. But what happened beginning at 7:11 was as various and sundry as the many guest lecturers in "HTC Seminar," the required course for the entire Honors Tutorial College incoming class.
     
  • Fifteen Ohio University faculty members honored for 'Excellence in Education' 11/28/2006

  • Fifteen Ohio University faculty members received recognition in Ohio Magazine's 2006 "Excellence in Education" program. The December 2006 issue of the magazine will feature winners in the program, which recognizes 150 of the state's top professors. The issue hits newsstands Nov. 30.

  • Global warming, overharvesting and biodiversity loss are top environmental concerns these days, which has heightened the need for college graduates with expertise in those issues.   • University increases student involvement in the general fee allocation 11/21/2006

  • Ohio University will implement a new budgeting process that will allow students to have significant input into the review and allocation of their general fee. The proposed change is a result of Student Senate expressing its desire to have more input in how the university allocates these funds each year, and the university's desire to target these funds to activities that provide the greatest benefits to students.
     
  • Lancaster Campus announces plans to renovate library, gymnasium 11/20/2006

  • Ohio University Lancaster Campus Dean MaryAnn Janosik announced that plans to proceed with the construction of a new community conference center have been postponed indefinitely. Instead, the campus will proceed with renovations to the Hannah V. McCauley Library and the gymnasium.

  • Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 22, the Lakefront Lines charter bus service from Athens, to Columbus, Ohio, will be based at the Athens Community Center located at 701 E. State St. The bus will both pick up and drop off riders at the location, arriving at the Community Center at 1:10 p.m. and leaving for Columbus at 1:20 p.m. seven days a week.

  • Ohio University English Department faculty member Kevin Haworth's book, "The Discontinuity of Small Things," recently was named runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. The newly created award honors international writers whose works focus on peace and is an outgrowth of the Dayton Peace Prize, which commemorates the 1995 peace accords that ended the war in Bosnia.
     
  • Faculty Senate governance group covers strategic reinvestment process 11/14/2006

  • Ohio University's strategic reinvestment process is under way, Associate Provost for Academic Budget and Planning John Day said at last night's November Faculty Senate meeting. Each year, the university will follow a four-step process to determine how it will reinvest the $6.3 million in funds set aside to support the goals stated in its academic plan, he said.

  • African Studies Association holds clothing drive 11/13/2006

  • The African Studies Association is putting on a winter clothing drive for international students and their families at Ohio University. Clothing collection began Friday, Nov. 3, and will end Sunday, Nov. 19, at sites including all residence halls and local churches. The clothing collected will be distributed from 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Nov. 21, in the Baker University Center Alumni Lounge.

  • Provost undergraduate research fund recipients announced 11/13/2006

  • Learning outside the classroom is a part of the Ohio University student experience. A group of students got additional encouragement this year when they were chosen as recipients of the 2006-07 Provost's Undergraduate Research Fund. This year 58 of the 83 applicants received about $50,000 in funding. Awards range from $100 to $1,500 per student.

  • Ohio University students living off-campus will have the opportunity to empty their cupboards and pantries for a good cause when the off-campus community assistants will collect non-perishable food items from student residents and community members living in the off-campus community Wednesday, Nov. 15.   • Preceding Veterans Day, the University will be visited by the Air Force's Health Professions Mobile Tour.   • Rhinoceros horns have long been objects of mythological beliefs. Some cultures prize them for their supposed magical or medicinal qualities. Others have used them as dagger handles or good luck charms. But new research at Ohio University removes some of the mystique by explaining how the horn gets its distinctive curve and sharply pointed tip.

  • Student organizations soon will have a new home -- on the third floor of Baker University Center -- that is triple the size of their current accommodations. The new center offers office space to 39 groups and valuable resources to all student groups.

  • Ohio University will examine whether to remove the name of U.S. Rep. Bob Ney from a building on the university's Eastern Campus in St. Clairsville, Ohio, officials said today.
     
  • High school students to trade chemistry knowledge for scholarships and cash 11/3/2006

  • High school seniors will convene on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Ohio University for the 24th annual Ohio Chemistry Contest. The contest, in which students take a written chemistry test, awards prizes for the first 14 places, and all who place receive certificates and a college-level textbook. The grand prize is $100 in cash and a full tuition scholarship renewable for up to three years, provided the recipient maintains a 3.4 grade point average.
     
  • Award-winning documentary to have free public screening 11/2/2006

  • A free public screening of the award-winning documentary, "American Blackout," will be shown on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Athena Cinema on Court Street.
     
  • Autism conference focuses on rising disorder [OU-COM] 11/2/2006

  • The mention of autism might bring to mind Dustin Hoffman's Academy Award-winning portrayal of Raymond Babbitt in the 1988 film "Rain Man." Statistics portray, however, a real world in which encounters with autism are far more frequent than its appearance on the big screen, a reality to be addressed in the "Focus on Autism: Applied Behavior Analysis and Social Communication" conference at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM).  The free conference takes place Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required.
     
  • Engineering dean's bequest creates endowed scholarship in mother's name 11/2/2006

  • Dennis Irwin, dean of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University, has made a bequest of $250,000 to The Ohio University Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship.
     
  • Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Centre named at Ohio University 11/2/2006

  • Ohio University celebrated today the naming of the Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Centre in the College of Business. The Ohio University Board of Trustees passed a resolution that approved the official naming of the center during its recent meeting. Ralph and Luci Schey are residents of Gates Mills, Ohio.
     
  • McDavis: Baker Center set to open winter quarter 11/2/2006

  • A grand opening celebration for the new Baker University Center will be held Feb. 10, 2007, President Roderick McDavis told local reporters yesterday. The building will be open and operational when winter quarter begins Jan. 2, 2007.

  • The new 183,300-square-foot Baker University Center does not contain a single classroom. But don’t be fooled: It will be a center for out-of-class learning in ways that have never existed on campus before.

  • The call to service comes in many forms. The nearly 40 Peace Corps alums on campus and in the community have answered the call by working around the world as volunteers -- from Niger to Nicaragua, from Korea to Kazakhstan.

  • A committee formed by Ohio University Provost Kathy Krendl has been charged to develop recommendations about how to improve childcare options available to children of graduate students and faculty and staff, as well as Athens area residents.
