  • A concert to benefit The Christine Wilson Foundation and The Childhood League of Columbus will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. Wilson was one of five Ohio University students killed in a tragic house fire in 2003.

  • Senior Sarah Sexton named George J. Mitchell Scholar 11/23/2005

  • Ohio University senior Sarah Sexton of Athens, has been named a George J. Mitchell Scholar for 2006-07. She is one of only 12 students awarded the prestigious scholarship, which will allow her to pursue a master's degree next year at the University of Limerick's Centre for Peace and Development Studies in Ireland. Sexton is the first Ohio University student to receive a Mitchell Scholarship.

  • Two Ohio University staff members of Independent and Distance and Learning Programs, (IDLP), were honored at the November conference of the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study, (AACIS). John Robinson, Instructional Design Specialist at Ohio University, received the Course Developer Award. Elizabeth Houdek, Instructional Design Specialist for IDLP, began her year-long term as the 2006 President of AACIS.

  • Marching 110 will perform in 2005 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 11/16/2005

  • Ohio University's Marching 110, the most exciting band in the land, will be the lead band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, Thursday, Nov. 24. Only nine other bands will perform during the 2.5-mile parade and only one of those is another university band.
     
  • WellWorks promotes the Great American Smokeout 11/14/2005

  • WellWorks will celebrate the Great American Smokeout with its "A Turkey for a Turkey" promotion. Participants who quit smoking cold turkey for 24 continuous hours on Nov. 16, 17 or 18 will receive a $15 gift certificate from Kroger good toward the purchase of their holiday turkey.
     
  • Malaysian government appoints Tun Abdul Razak Chair 11/14/2005

  • The Malaysian Ministry of Education has appointed Professor Dato' Mohamad Abu Bakar to be the 12th Tun Abdul Razak Professor at Ohio University. The Razak chairholders are senior Malaysian scholars selected by the Ministry of Education in consultation with the Razak Council and Ohio University, who have a two-year residency at Ohio.
     
  • University receives 'A' from Black Coaches Association for head football search 11/14/2005

  • Ohio University was one of only five schools nationally to earn an "A" and one of only two schools to receive a perfect score in the recently released "A Hiring Report Card for NCAA Division 1-A and 1-AA Football Head Coaching Positions in American Higher Education."
     
  • Kittle chosen as Classified Employee of the Month 11/14/2005

  • Classified Senate honored Nell Ann Kittle by naming her Ohio University's Classified Employee of the Month for October 2005. Kittle is an administrative coordinator in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and has been with Ohio University for 23 years.

  • The Lancaster daycare facility, Children of Ohio University Lancaster Campus, celebrated the opening of their new playground Nov. 9.
     
  • Ohio University-Eastern professor elected to national childhood educators office 11/14/2005

  • Dr. Paula McMurray-Schwarz, associate professor at Ohio University Eastern, was recently elected Vice President for Conferences for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE).

"Achieving Grant Writing Success" will be held at Ohio University Dec. 9 and 10 from 9 to 4 p.m. Participants will receive two specially designed manuals and a certificate of completion.
     
  • Memorial service in honor of Beth K. Stocker to be held Nov. 17 11/10/2005

  • On November 17, Ohio University will hold a memorial service in honor of Beth K. Stocker, longtime alumna, benefactor and friend of the university. The service will take place at Galbreath Chapel at 2 p.m. with a reception in Baker University Center's Elizabeth Baker Room immediately following.

  • Professor shares passion for active learning with students 11/9/2005

  • When Maureen Magee left her job in Washington, D.C., to come study international development at Ohio University, she did so with the intention of getting back to Africa where she spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Gambia. Now she hopes to travel to the continent next summer as part of a new study abroad program focusing on HIV/AIDS in Africa. Mandi Chikombero, an assistant professor of telecommunication, will lead the program, an HIV/AIDS field study to Gaborone, Botswana.

  • Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis set the stage for the fourth annual Community and Campus Days Showcase when he said aroused the crowd at Nelson Commons by saying that he envisioned the event being so big in the future, that it must be held in the university's 13,000 seat Convocation Center.

  • The musical group Ulali will perform Monday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Founded 15 years ago, Ulali is the first Native women's group to create their own sound from their strong traditional roots and contemporary styles. The group features Pura Fe (Tuscarora), Soni (Mayan, Apache, Yaqui), and Jennifer (Tuscarora).

  • Department of African American Studies receives grant to study Underground Railroad 11/1/2005

  • Ohio University's Department of African American Studies recently received more than $50,000 in contributions from Wayne National Forest and the 1804 Fund. The money will be used to continue the department's investigation into the African American presence in the Ohio River Valley and Ohio's role in the Underground Railroad.

  • Ohio University senior Adrienne Porter wins prestigious Fulbright award 11/1/2005

  • “I felt like I had just won a million dollars,” says Fulbright award-winner Adrienne Porter, recalling the day she received the award letter. “My roommate had to read it for me because I was all shaky and excited.” The scholarship granted the Ohio University senior the chance of a lifetime, a teaching assistantship in Chile.
     
  • Marnette Perry funds one of Ohio University's first Appalachian Scholars 11/1/2005

  • Ohio University trustee M. Marnette Perry and her husband, Paul, have become early donors to Ohio’s new Appalachian Scholars Program. Perry, who grew up in southeast Ohio and took classes at Ohio University Southern Campus, is Senior Vice President at the Kroger Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Perry has been with Kroger since 1972, when she joined the company as a part-time cashier in Portsmouth, Ohio.

  • Ohio University’s Forensics Team battled this weekend at the Ball State University Speech and Debate Tournament, and won first place in Overall Team Sweepstakes and the Individual Events Sweepstakes. The team also took home the Benson-Hedges Traveling Trophy.
