  • What's in your wallet? Much like the well-known promise of enhanced security promoted by one credit card company, Ohio University's Office of Information Technology wants to protect a different card in your wallet. OIT will begin issuing new identification cards to all faculty, staff and students on June 18.
     
  • African prince crowns OU career with Ph.D. 5/31/2007

  • Colleagues in Athens already know him as a musician, scholar and teacher. But in his home of Ghana, Agya Boakye-Boaten is known as something else: a prince. On June 8, this tribal prince, drummer and soon-to-be professor will earn his doctorate in cultural studies and conclude six years of study at Ohio University, where he will have earned three degrees.

  • Hugh Sherman, a former Ohio University faculty member and associate dean, will return to the university Aug. 1 as dean of the College of Business. He succeeds Glenn Corlett, who will retire June 30 after 10 years as dean.

  • Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis will serve on a panel at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education on May 30 in San Francisco. The panel, titled "Embracing Diversity in a Flat World: A Mandate for Presidents and Boards of Trustees," will feature the only three African Americans currently serving as presidents of predominantly white universities.
     
  • Ohio University closed May 28 for Memorial Day 5/24/2007

  • Ohio University will be closed Monday, May 28, in observance of the national Memorial Day holiday. The closure includes all five regional campuses and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The university will reopen Tuesday, May 29, operating under normally scheduled hours.
     
  • Criminal investigation comes to a close 5/24/2007

  • President Roderick J. McDavis announced today (May 23) that the criminal investigation into a student who exhibited threatening behaviors on campus is complete. The university has determined it will not press criminal charges.

  • Current high school seniors, juniors and sophomores in the top 20 percent of their class may be eligible to take one tuition-free freshman-level college course through the Summer Scholar Program at Ohio University Eastern Campus.

  • Ohio University Southern Campus will host a special presentation by Parry Aftab, the cybercrime expert who is often called "The Privacy Lawyer," at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the Bowman Auditorium.
     
  • State's campus safety task force holds first meeting 5/1/2007

  • Ohio University served as a videoconference site Monday for a meeting of a new statewide task force looking into campus safety issues. Ohio University was one of the eight videoconference sites for the meeting, which was hosted by Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut from the Ohio Supercomputer Center in Columbus.
     
  • New Proctorville Center dedicated 5/1/2007

  • The new $4.9 million Ohio University Proctorville Center, dedicated last week, is a satellite site of the university's Southern Campus.

  • Armed with a bell he found in his family's Christmas decorations and motivated by a desire to be "like the guy at Wal-Mart," 4-year-old Anthony Benton recently led his classmates at Ohio University's Child Development Center in raising $1,000 for Columbus Children's Hospital.
     
  • Trustees grant emeriti status to 36 faculty 5/1/2007

  • The Ohio University Board of Trustees last week awarded 36 faculty members emeriti status based on the recommendation of those individuals’ supervisors and colleagues. The status is effective upon retirement.
