  • University's first Appalachian Scholars announced 5/31/2006

  • Ohio University has announced its first class of Appalachian Scholars. The 10 incoming students will begin classes at Ohio University in the fall. The Appalachian Scholars program is a need-based scholarship initiative that provides scholarship support to students from the 29 Appalachian Ohio counties to attend Ohio University.
     
  • National expert to consult on College of Engineering and Technology plagiarism cases 5/31/2006

  • Ohio University released a report today in the ongoing investigation into plagiarism in master's theses completed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Fritz J. and Dolores Russ College of Engineering and Technology. The university also announced today that as it moves forward with the investigation, it will consult with a national expert on academic ethics, and it will create a committee to promote academic honesty at the institutional level.

  • W. Stephen Howard, director of African Studies and the Institute for the African Child, and a professor in the School of Telecommunications at Ohio University, has been selected as a Fulbright Senior Scholar. He will spend the winter and spring quarters of the 2006-07 academic year teaching and conducting research in Nigeria.

  • The newest class of Templeton Scholars was recently announced. The scholarship program, now in its sixth year, is designed to attract exceptional students from underrepresented races to campus.

  • History professor Kevin Uhalde wins Rome Prize Fellowship 5/26/2006

  • Kevin Uhalde, assistant professor of history, has received a Rome Prize fellowship from the American Academy of Rome. The academy yearly invites emerging scholars and artists to live and work at the American Academy of Rome's 12-building, 11-acre site atop the Janiculum hill in Rome, Italy, for a period of six months to two years.
     
  • Local school districts honor College of Education deans 5/26/2006

  • The Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS) presented the 6th Annual Leadership and Service Recognitions at its April 25 meeting. College of Education Interim Dean Thomas E. Davis, Senior Associate Dean Glenn Doston and Associate Dean Dianne Gut were all honored for their exemplary leadership and support of CORAS and public education in Appalachian Ohio.
     
  • Russ College honors alumni, faculty and staff 5/26/2006

  • The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University recently honored four alumni as distinguished graduates and recognized faculty and staff for outstanding teaching, research and performance in 2005-06. The awardees were recognized April 28 at the college's annual awards celebration.
     
  • $1 million Department of Education grant supports African language and area studies 5/26/2006

  • A U.S. Department of Education grant totaling $1,050,000 will fund African language and area studies for more than 60 Ohio University graduate students over the next four years. Ohio University's African Studies Program was first awarded Title VI funding from the Department of Education for Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships in 1994. Since then more than 100 Ohio University graduate students have been supported by these fellowships.
     
  • Education doctoral student wins dissertation fellowship 5/26/2006

  • Melissa L. Freeman, doctoral student and research associate in Ohio University's Center for Higher Education, has been awarded the Charles I. Brown dissertation fellowship. This nationally competitive award entitles Freeman to a $15,000 stipend to complete her dissertation, "Gender, Geography, Transfer, and Baccalaureate Completion."
     
  • Ohio University student and alumna win Fulbright awards to Latin America 5/26/2006

  • Two Ohio University students have won Fulbright awards to Latin America. Tod Imperato, a master's student in Latin American studies, will travel to Chile to serve as an English teaching assistant. Carly Witmer, who graduated in November with a bachelor's degree in fine arts, will spend the 2006-07 year in Quito, Ecuador, studying the indigenous art movement Indigenismo and creating paintings influenced by that movement.
     
  • [OU-COM] Shubrook receives national recognition for excellence in diabetes care 5/25/2006

  • Jay Shubrook, D.O. (’94), associate professor of family medicine and director of the Diabetes Fellowship, recently earned recognition from the Diabetes Physician Recognition Program for providing exemplary care to his diabetic patients. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) jointly created the program in an effort to highlight the most diligent doctors in the field.

  • Ohio University will connect Ohio's bioinformatics and bioscience research leaders at the inaugural Ohio Collaborative Bioinformatics Conference (OCCBIO), June 28-30. Held at the Athens campus, the conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of approaches, research findings and experiences in the domain of computational approaches to biology-related problems.

  • After gaining broad-based campus and community input and support, Ohio University announced today its enhanced comprehensive strategy to reduce high-risk drinking. The university will move ahead to convene a committee with constituents from across campus to make recommendations for implementation of the various components of the overall strategy. The changes to policy and practices on campus will become effective fall quarter 2006.

  • Like pieces in a giant jigsaw puzzle, continents have split, drifted and merged again many times throughout Earth's history, but geologists haven't understood the mechanism behind the moves. A new study now offers evidence that continents sometimes break along preexisting lines of weakness created when small chunks of land attach to a larger continent.

  • Ohio University's Flying Bobcats Flight Team placed ninth among 28 schools at the 2006 National Intercollegiate Flying Association's Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (NIFA SAFECON) held May 8-13 at The Ohio State University. The Flying Bobcats out-competed Oklahoma State University, Florida Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, and Kent State University on their way to an overall ninth-place finish.

  • Gates Foundation-Ross County Scholar's Fund recipients announced during event in Chillicothe 5/19/2006

  • Fifteen students from Ross County were introduced as this year's recipients of scholarships from The Gates Foundation–Ross County Scholar's Fund. Chillicothe native Larry A. Gates and his wife, Mary, established the scholarship fund to pave the way to a college education for students graduating from Ross County high schools.

  • Ohio University student Rachel Friedson has been selected as the 2006 Mandel Federation Executive Recruitment and Education Program (FEREP) Scholar. Friedson, a senior double-majoring in political science in the Honors Tutorial College and French in the College of Arts and Sciences, will receive a $20,000 scholarship for her graduate tuition and a Certificate of Jewish Communal Leadership, as well as a two-year position within the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland.

  • Ohio University student Nick Engerer has been selected as a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Scholar. Engerer, a sophomore geography-meteorology major, will receive $16,000 tuition support over the next two years, as well as a paid ten-week internship in the field of meteorology during the summer between his junior and senior years.

  • "What is the Appalachian voice?" asked Lynda Ann Ewin, professor emerita of sociology and anthropology who led the panel discussion Silent Appalachians: a Panel on Diversity Wednesday night. "When it comes to silencing Appalachians, what in our environment gives us voice, not only to have opinions, but voiced opinions?" Diversity and Appalachian identity stirred discussion among panelists and listeners during the panel sponsored by Sharon Denham, DSN, and the Appalachian Learning Community in Walter Hall. Ewin led the panel discussion by first asking, "What does it mean to be Appalachian?"

  • The Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment recently received a "pooled fund study"award of $1.3 million from several state departments of transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to investigate procedures for designing and constructing pavements that can handle more traffic over a longer period of time with less maintenance.

  • The feature length movie, "COONS! Night of the Bandits of the Night," an 82-minute movie about a campground attacked by killer raccoons, will premiere at Mitchell Auditorium Saturday, May 20. The screening will begin at 7:30 p.m. with the short film, "Call Kid Kevorkian," written and directed by Ohio University alum Lehr Beidelschies, '05.

  • A new anonymous procedure for reporting suspected criminal, unethical or otherwise inappropriate behavior was contracted by Internal Audit with Ethics Point, an independent mediator in Portland, Ore. The system allows Ohio University employees to report violations anonymously via telephone or the Internet.

  • The AIDS Memorial Quilt project, the biggest community arts project in the world, is coming to Ohio University on May 15, 16 and 17. Twenty blocks of the quilt will be displayed in Baker Center Ballroom.

  • David H. Holben, associate professor in the School of Human and Consumer Sciences at Ohio University, has been selected as a Canada-U.S. Fulbright Scholar. The first Fulbright Scholar from the College of Health and Human Services, Holben will spend the next winter quarter as the visiting research chair in sustainability at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.
     
  • Ohio University welcomes new Cutler Scholars 5/15/2006

  • The Ohio University Manasseh Cutler Scholars Program welcomes 11 new recipients of the prestigious four-year undergraduate scholarship. The scholarship includes an annual stipend to cover undergraduate tuition, room and board, and four summers of enrichment experiences, including study and work aboard.

Schori, a doctoral student in plant and biological sciences, will study a genus of forest trees in the Philippines.

  • Ohio University students Julie DePaulo, Troy Johnson and Alyssa Malchi have won Fulbright awards to Asia. DePaulo, a senior world religions major, will spend the 2006-07 year studying the spirituality of young adults in a small area of Japan. Johnson, a master's student in international development studies, will travel to Indonesia to research nation-wide voter education projects initiated by Muslim organizations. Malchi, a senior hearing, speech and language science major, will teach English on a Fulbright teaching assistantship in South Korea.

  • Ohio University, the WOUB Center for Public Media, and Educational Technology for Southeastern Ohio (eTSEO) have announced that the organizations have formed a partnership to provide a dynamic new instructional technology service that will be free to K-12 schools in an 18-county region of southeastern Ohio.

  • Clear skies and warm weather helped foster the overall entertaining and educational environment of the 2006 Earth Day Celebration held April 22 in front of College Green. Residents and students were found strolling through the green lawn, ice cream cones in hand, stopping to pick up trash in observation of Earth Day. A young boy skipped around playfully in a light switch costume to demonstrate energy conservation. The celebration featured a workshop on composting and recycling, a panel discussion about economics and the environment, live music by local and national artists, food, games and raffles.

  • To identify and describe new plant species, scientists traditionally spend hours in museums studying dried, pressed plant collections and days or weeks in the field locating living populations, which requires considerable time and money. But a pilot project completed by two Ohio University students at the Royal Botanical Garden at Kew, a suburb of London, might change that approach for scientists all over the world.

  • 'Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul' co-author to visit Ohio University-Zanesville 5/1/2006

  • National Nurses Week is May 1 to May 7. In appreciation to the service nursing professionals provide, Ohio University-Zanesville, with support from the Alice C. Tom Endowment Fund, is hosting a free program entitled "Chicken Soup for the Nurses Soul." The program, which is open to all nursing professionals, will be held on Tuesday, May 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Ohio University-Zanesville in the Campus Center Conference Room.
