  • An ensemble from Capital University that blends music and technology will perform at Ohio University-Zanesville's Elson Hall Auditorium at noon on Tuesday, April 6.

  • The Robert P. Comer Education Conference will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 2, in McCracken Hall.
     
  • WOUB Radio strengthens core news service (03/30/2004)

  • WOUB-FM has added five daily news, culture, and talk programs to its midday schedule to give the station a continuous weekday news and information service from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Four of the new programs are from National Public Radio (NPR) in Washington, D.C., and the fifth is from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
     
  • Evening to benefit Kenyan orphans (03/29/2004)

  • A benefit dinner and raffle to raise funds for the Kenyan Children's Fund will take place Wednesday, March 31, at 6 p.m. in room 199, Irvine Hall, on the Ohio University campus in Athens. The Kenyan Children's Fund is a group of students and faculty organizations dedicated to supporting children affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Kenya.
     
  • GRE, GMAT and LSAT test prep courses offered (03/29/2004)

  • Ohio University's Community and Professional Programs Test Prep Courses focus on test-taking and skill-building exercises required to earn the high score you need. The next scheduled test prep course will meet on Saturdays from May 1-22.
     
  • Jean Lewis named interim director of undergraduate admissions (03/29/2004)

  • Jean Lewis has been named interim director of undergraduate admissions effective May 1. She will replace Norman "Kip" Howard who resigned his position as assistant vice president for enrollment services/director of undergraduate admissions effective April 30 to accept the position of assistant vice provost for enrollment management at the University of South Carolina.
     
  • Ohio University, City of Athens develop strategies aimed at curbing springtime disturbances (03/29/2004)

  • Ohio University and City of Athens officials are working together to develop new approaches designed to limit the difficulties that have risen from inappropriate and illegal behavior by Ohio University students and others during time-change weekend and other occasions during spring quarter. The disturbances have occurred primarily uptown and at off-campus house parties.
     
  • Asbury Park Press series receives first Farfel Prize for excellence in investigative reporting (03/26/2004)

  • For its 38-page, eight-part series "Profiting from Public Service," New Jersey's Asbury Park Press will receive the Ursula and Gilbert Farfel Prize for Excellence in Investigative Reporting - a $25,000 award recognizing the finest examples of investigative reporting by print media in the United States. Ursula Farfel is a 1956 graduate of Ohio University.

  • The Roenigk Family Foundation of Scottsdale, Ariz., recently made a commitment that will establish an endowed chair in chemistry at Ohio University as part of the Bicentennial Campaign. The Roenigk Chair will strengthen the College of Arts & Sciences capacity to recruit and retain outstanding scholars in chemistry.
     
  • American Electric Power pledges $250,000 to establish professorship for regional wetlands research (03/18/2004)

  • American Electric Power (AEP) has pledged $250,000 as part of Ohio University's Bicentennial Campaign to establish the American Electric Power Watershed Research and Reclamation Professorship at Ohio University's George V. Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs.

  • This February, the first Ohio University College Bowl team since 1989 competed and placed in a regional tournament. Out of 16 opponents, Ohio University tied for third in the region and ended the tournament in fourth place after a tiebreaker
     
  • Bobcats rank third after fith week of 'Recyclemania 2004' (03/12/2004)

  • Ohio University is holding on to third place after recording the third best weight in week five of RecycleMania 2004. The Bobcats sit fourth with 24.18 recycled pounds per student living on campus. Miami University, a co-founder of the annual event with Ohio University, leads the 10-week competition with 32.35 pounds, followed by second-place Dartmouth University (30.25). The final results will be announced on April 16. The first- and second-place finishers will receive Recycle Mania trophies.
     
  • Baker Peace Conference to discuss 'United States and Global Hegemony' (03/12/2004)

  • "The United States and Global Hegemony" will be the focus of the annual Baker Peace Conference at Ohio University on April 1-2. The conference will examine the strategic, economic, and ideological roles of the United States in contemporary world affairs.
     
  • Campus-wide power outage scheduled for March 20 (03/11/2004)

  • A campus-wide power outage has been scheduled for Saturday, March 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. to commission the newly installed 69 KV substation. This outage is necessary to test the newly installed switchgear and transformers and to make sure the equipment is safely operating as intended.
     
  • Committee instituted to honor historic case (03/11/2004)

  • In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's monumental decision in Brown v. Board of Education, an Ohio University Steering Committee has been established to coordinate activities in commemoration of the event. The landmark decision, disclosed on May 17, 1954, declared school segregation a violation of the 14th Amendment and therefore unconstitutional by law.
     
  • Ohio hockey team wins another national championship (03/10/2004)

  • For the fourth time, and the first since three consecutive seasons in the mid-'90s, the icers will hang another American Collegiate Hockey Association national championship banner. Dan Morris' squad, which began the season with a 4-5 record, defeated defending ACHA champion Penn State 5-4 for the title ? and a 32-7-2 final mark.
     
  • 'Mixed Messages' opens at the Kennedy Museum of Art (03/10/2004)

  • "Mixed Messages: Rethinking Postcard Representations" is a new exhibition opening at the Kennedy Museum of Art on March 11, 2004. A public reception will be held at the Kennedy Museum on March 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. "Mixed Messages" is curated by Ohio University graduate students in the current Art 564: Museum and Community Art Education class and includes both Art Education and Cultural Studies in Education majors.

  • Five Ohio University professors were recently selected as recipients of the second annual College of Fine Arts Creative Research Awards.

  • A significant renovation will transform the second floor of Ohio University?s Alden Library into an innovative learning and study space to be known as the Learning Commons.   • Founders Citation: Donald Spencer (03/09/2004)

  • Donald Spencer was the first African-American to chair the Ohio University Board of Trustees. He served on the board from 1974 to 1983 and was chair from 1979 to 1980. Spencer is on the library cabinet for the Bicentennial Campaign. He also has served as chair of the Ohio University Libraries National Advisory Council.

  • The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine presented its 2004 Service Awards on the afternoon Feb. 25 in Irvine Hall on the Athens campus. The college recognized 50 employees with a combined 625 years of service to the college. Several units of the college also presented awards to outstanding employees.

  • If you want to learn about the Peace Corps, Danielle Matta is the person to see at Ohio University. Matta is the Peace Corps recruiter on campus and a second-year graduate student in international development studies. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1999-2001 and now puts that experience to work recruiting other Peace Corps volunteers.

  • Some say chemistry is a lonely discipline because interaction only occurs between the student and a book, says Jared Butcher, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ohio University. But the Faculty Learning Community (FLC) Revising the Professional Communication Curriculum within the College of Business is making some changes to ensure Ohio University is one institution with prepared graduates.
     
  • Ohio University Press/Swallow Press present 'Red, White, Black and Blue' (03/02/2004)

  • "Red, White, Black, and Blue" began as a collaborative memoir by William M. "Bill" Drennen, a European American, and Kojo (William T.) Jones, an African American. Both Appalachian men grew up in the South Hills section of Charleston, W.Va.
