  • Cuban scholar Eliana Rivero will deliver the keynote address for the Ohio Latin Americanist Conference, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. "Cosa Nostra, Mare Nostrum: Mafia Motifs in Transnational Caribbean Culture," will take place at 1 p.m. in the Ohio University Inn Ballroom. Other highlights of the conference will include 75 paper presentations by faculty and students in Gordy Hall and a Latin dance with music by Latin Jazz.

  • This week, two Ohio University athletes, senior cross country runner Craig Leon and senior basketball player Lauren Kohn, were named academic All-Americans based on their skills in the classroom and in competition.

  • Ohio University's Robert F. "Bob" Rakowski will be remembered as an internationally renowned researcher, a caring teacher and mentor of students, and an ardent fan of the women's volleyball team. Rakowski, 66, professor of biological sciences, died Feb. 19.

  • Professor of Psychology Chris France is conducting research that aims to make novice blood donors become loyal givers. Funded by a four-year, $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, the study's goals are to reduce the negative reactions at the time of blood donation for 400 novice donors and then track them for two years after the donation to see how likely they are to give again.
     
  • Big weekend sees wins for swimming and diving, men's basketball 2/25/2008

  • The women's swimming and diving team captured its 10th Mid-American Conference championship Saturday night at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium. Men's basketball also scored a nationally televised win over George Mason.

  • A tradition of excellence at Ohio University has a new name. The Scripps College of Communication's School of Telecommunications now is the School of Media Arts and Studies, a name approved by the Ohio University Board of Trustees on Feb. 9.
     
  • Title change reflects program's evolution 2/22/2008

  • Ohio University's Women's Studies program is getting ready for a small but meaningful change. Effective this fall, the program will be known as Women's and Gender Studies, a modification acknowledging the varied nature of the program's curriculum over the past few years.
     
  • Haning Hall's namesake returns 2/22/2008

  • Harley H. Haning became treasurer of Ohio University in 1906, the same year the Athens Post Office took up residence in a new three-story building on West Union Street. The university purchased the building in 1964 and renamed it Haning Hall two years later, but no likeness of the building's namesake was on the property. That is, until earlier this week when his great-nephew returned Haning's image to the building.

  • The 2008 Ohio football recruiting class turned out to be the best in the Mid-American Conference, according to the rankings released Thursday by the MAC Report Online.

  • The first graduates of a new LPN-to-RN collaborative nursing program involving Ohio University-Southern and Collins Career Center in Lawrence County earned, as a class, a 93 percent pass rate on their recent state licensing exam, exceeding both the national and state averages of just over 86 percent.

  • The School of Media Arts and Studies (formerly the School of Telecommunications) hosted its sixth annual Shoot Out video competition Feb. 15-17. The completed projects were presented and judged Sunday evening with the top films receiving monetary prizes.
     
  • Regional campuses host Kennedy Lectures 2/20/2008

  • Kennedy Lectures are planned on two Ohio University regional campuses next week as part of Black History Month observances. Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene T. Harris will speak Wednesday at Ohio University-Chillicothe. The following day, The Mark Lomax Quartet will perform at Ohio University-Zanesville.

  • Changes to Ohio University policy 41.135, which identifies a range of unacceptable behaviors by employees (including threats, acts of intimidation, harassment and violence) and establishes procedures for dealing with violators, were approved Feb. 4. The policy takes effect 30 days after approval.

  • Ohio University expects to receive word at the end of this month on state funding for the four Choose Ohio First Scholarship competition proposals in which it is the lead or co-lead institution.   • Phillips offers peek 'behind the music' 2/13/2008

  • As a college undergraduate, Mark Phillips bypassed the folk music genre popular in the 1960s to become a "serious musician." His interests gradually turned to composing, which provided a creative diversion from his performance studies. Luckily for Ohio University -- to say nothing of performers and audiences around the world -- Phillips received such positive feedback to his arrangements that composing became a passion.
