  • Speech champion and Ohio University sophomore Dan Glaser got a back-to-school surprise: a billboard erected in his honor near his hometown of Louisville, Ohio.

  • The Ohio Court of Claims today ruled in Ohio University's favor, dismissing a lawsuit that two Ohio University alumni filed more than a year ago.

  • The spotlight has been focused on an Ohio University-Chillicothe faculty member for his pioneering efforts in regards to sportsmen and conservation. OU-C Professor of History John Reiger is the first individual interviewed for "Sierra Sportsmen," a Web site the Sierra Club recently launched to reach out to hunters and anglers.

  • Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland toured Ohio University-Southern last week, addressing high school juniors and seniors who are beneficiaries of an effort aimed at improving students' science, technology, engineering, math and foreign language skills.
     
  • A stage for end-of-life issues 8/20/2007

  • "Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver" chronicles the experiences of a daughter taking care of her parents, both of whom die of cancer at home. The play by Merri Biechler, who just completed her MFA in playwriting while also working as a graduate assistant in OU-COM's academic affairs office, will be incorporated as a component in OU-COM's physician education.
     
  • Scripps College well-represented at 90th annual AEJMC Convention [Communication] 8/20/2007

  • More than 35 faculty and students represented the Scripps College of Communication at the 90th annual Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Convention. Distinguished Professor Guido H. Stempel III and Professor Patrick Washburn became part of history when the AEJMC bestowed its top research honors on two professors from a single university.
     
  • U.S. News: Ohio University ranks fourth in nation on graduation rate performance 8/17/2007

  • According to U.S. News & World Report's annual guide to colleges released Aug. 17, Ohio University's graduation rate performance was fourth out of 257 ranked national universities and a full 18 percent higher than predicted. This is the third year in a row the university has made it into the top 10 in this category.
     
  • Volleyball tops MAC preseason poll [ohiobobcats.com] 8/15/2007

  • The Mid-American Conference 2007 Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll has been released by the league office and the Ohio volleyball team has been tabbed the preseason favorite to capture the conference regular season and tournament titles. Ohio received 11 votes for the regular season title and 10 votes to claim the MAC Tournament championship.
     
  • SEOCEMS summer conference shares action research [Education] 8/9/2007

  • The Southeast Ohio Center for Excellence in Mathematics third annual summer conference was held at Ohio University last week. The conference gave investigation teams from all over Appalachian Ohio, comprising small groups of public school teachers paired with a university professor, the opportunity to share their research that aims to solve a local problem or improve a local situation.

  • Trustees review drafts of five-year plans 8/3/2007

  • During a retreat in Columbus Aug. 3, members of the Ohio University Board of Trustees saw drafts of two preliminary, five-year plans and had a chance to give their initial feedback. The plans came in response to a request from the board at the last meeting.
     
  • Governor creates University System of Ohio 8/2/2007

  • Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis said he supports a decision by Gov. Ted Strickland to unite Ohio's public universities under one system to focus on their common goals.
     
  • Pact takes Ohio University researcher's technology to market 8/2/2007

  • It would be great -- and more environmentally responsible -- to run cars on hydrogen, but experts say it would cost about four times as much as gasoline. Ohio University's Gerardine Botte has figured out how to produce hydrogen fuel inexpensively, and she and the university signed an agreement to license her technology to a corporation that will take it to the marketplace.

  • New York attorney general initiates probe of university vendor 8/2/2007

  • New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office is investigating University Financial Services Inc. and its agreements with athletics departments. The office has requested information from or issued subpoenas to 39 universities that have contracts with the company, including Ohio University.
     
  • Design in Asia study abroad program to strengthen international ties 8/2/2007

  • Twenty-two Ohio University students have delved into a month-long collaboration as part of the Design in Asia study abroad program. The study experience will integrate not only students from the Interior Architecture and Visual Communication programs at Ohio University but also students from Chubu University in Japan and the Beijing Institute of Graphic Design in China.

  • The Ohio Association for Persons in Supported Employment will honor Ohio University employee, Jeremy Allman, with the 2007 Ohio Personal Achievement Award on Aug. 2 in Columbus, Ohio. He became just the third Ohio University employee to win the state award.
