  • Entry deadline nears for Appalachian Art Show at Zanesville 8/30/2005

  • Sept. 16 is the final date to submit work to be exhibited at the Sixth Annual Women of Appalachia Art Show. Female artists, including high school students, from Ohio's Appalachian counties are invited to submit work for the show.
     
  • Stopping at the Buzz 8/29/2005

  • Ohio University is serious about changing the conditions that facilitate high-risk drinking. The Buzz Contest is a campus-wide competition that took place last spring to create low-risk drinking concepts for television public service announcements, built on the peer-to-peer messaging developed for the Bring Your Own Judgment Campaign (BYOJ).
     
  • EHS receives awards at summer conference 8/29/2005

  • Ohio University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) received two awards at the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) Conference held this summer in Philadelphia.
     
  • Residence halls set to open Sept. 1 8/25/2005

  • Beginning at noon on Thursday, Sept. 1, residence halls will open for new Ohio University students. Move-in will continue for new students on Friday, Sept. 2, beginning at 9 a.m., and the residence halls will open for upperclassmen on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 9 a.m.
     
  • Alumna and benefactor Beth K. Stocker dies at 97 8/25/2005

  • Beth K. Stocker, wife of the late C. Paul Stocker and dedicated friend of Ohio University and the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering Technology, died Aug. 23 at her home. She was 97. The Stockers were among Ohio University's most generous benefactors.
     
  • Beth Novak named IT Educator of the Year 8/24/2005

  • Assistant Professor Beth Novak, who teaches in the School of Telecommunications at Ohio University, was named IT Educator of the Year by the Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio (ITAAO) during its annual meeting July 27, 2005.
     
  • Osteopathic Heritage Foundation gift to fund integrated research facility 8/23/2005

  • The Osteopathic Heritage Foundation (OHF) of Columbus, Ohio, announced grants totaling $11,461,289 to Ohio University for osteopathic medical education programs and a research facility. The foundation has awarded more than $15 million to the university since 1999.
     
  • Eastern Campus students to attend Bobcat football game 8/17/2005

  • Students from the Eastern Campus have been invited to Athens to cheer on the Bobcats in their matchup against Kent State University on Sept. 24. Regional students have the opportunity to visit the main campus and to feel a part of Athens student life.

  • When forest fires rage in the western United States during the summer's driest months, U.S. forest service administrators can blame it on the management practices of the past, says researcher Ryan McEwan.
     
  • Russ College announces leadership changes 8/16/2005

  • The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University announces several leadership changes. Jerrel Mitchell and Michael Prudich will step down from their current positions.
     
  • Private gift to support asphalt research at Ohio University 8/15/2005

  • The National Asphalt Laboratory received a $25,000 private gift in July. The gift was made by Trip Morris, president and CEO of Cem-Base Corporation of Twinsburg, Ohio. It will be used to support research of soil stabilization in pavement design.
     
  • James Kahler to head the Center for Sports Administration 8/11/2005

  • Ohio University named James "Jim" Kahler as the executive director of the Center for Sports Administration on Aug. 11. He has more than 22 years in the sports business industry and has been the executive director of the MBA Sports Business Program at Arizona State University for the past three years.
     
  • Senate statement on Teri Geiger 8/11/2005

  • Teri E. Geiger has been named director of government relations at Ohio University. Senate President Bill Harris issued this statement.
     
  • Teri Geiger named as director of government relations 8/10/2005

  • Teri E. Geiger has been named director of government relations at Ohio University, university President Roderick J. McDavis announced at a press conference today. Geiger, 41, an Ohio University alumna, is currently chief of staff for the Ohio Senate. She will begin her new duties in late September.
     
  • Bucking Gravity 8/10/2005

  • Ohio University seniors Andrew Dodd and Ryan King are studying the effects of gravity on mutant plants with Sarah Wyatt, assistant professor of environmental and plant biology. This research, initially funded by NASA, aims to explain how and why some plants, considered genetic mutants, react differently to gravity, and how these reactions can be used for beneficial purposes.
     
  • Ohio University to offer two-day Grant Writing Seminar 8/9/2005

  • Ohio University Community and Professional Programs will be offering a new and improved two-day seminar on grant writing - Achieving Grantwriting Success - Sept. 9 and 10 on the Ohio University campus is Grover Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
     
  • Ohio University and Passion Works team up for collaborative art study 8/9/2005

  • School of Communication Studies Assistant Professor Lynn Harter and Patty Mitchell, founder of Passion Works, were recently awarded gants that enable them to conduct an ethnographic study of the use of collaborative art among people with and without disabilities to build community.
     
  • Health policy fellow to speak on international space station 8/9/2005

  • Kira Bacal, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, will lecture on the International Space Station's medical system at noon, Thursday, Aug. 11, at Ohio University's Irvine Hall, room 194.
     
  • Avionics Engineering Center sets external research record 8/8/2005

  • The Avionics Engineering Center at Ohio University set a record for externally funded research during the fiscal year 2005, having received $8.5 million in grants and contracts. The center, part of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology, is the only facility of its kind in the United States.
     
  • 'Los Angeles Times' wins 2005 Farfel Prize for Excellence in Investigative Reporting 8/4/2005

  • 'The Los Angeles Times' received the 2005 Ursula and Gilbert Farfel Prize for Excellence in Investigative Reporting, a $25,000 award recognizing the finest investigative reporting by print media in the United States, for its five-part series investigating the Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.
     
  • PBS to offer WOUB documentary nationally 8/4/2005

  • WOUB's "Passion Works: A Story of Flying" has been selected for national distribution by the Public Broadcasting Service's PBS Plus. The documentary will be distributed in February 2006 for PBS stations nationwide.
     
  • Alden Library exhibit features Athens County's land and people 8/3/2005

  • 'Athens County's Land and People: A Bicentennial Exhibit' is the subject of the current exhibit in Alden Library's Robert E. and Jean R. Mahn Center at Ohio University. The exhibit celebrates the founding of Athens County in 1805.
     
  • Precollege welcomes new students and parents to the university community 8/3/2005

  • Fifteen Precollege sessions take place from July 25 to Aug. 13 this year, offering an introduction to university life for new students and parents and a lift for the local economy.

  • Ohio University-Zanesville is offering a free class to anyone who has not taken a course at the university in the past five years. They will have a booth set up at Colony Square Mall Aug. 13 through 19 for class registration.
     
  • Charles McWeeny named interim Fine Arts dean 8/1/2005
