  • Charles A. McWeeny has been named dean of the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University, effective May 1, President Roderick J. McDavis announced today. McWeeny was named interim dean of the college in August 2005.
     
  • Ohio University student earns nationally competitive Morris K. Udall Scholarship 4/28/2006

  • Ohio University student Rachel Cook has been named a Morris K. Udall Scholar for 2006. Cook, a junior Honors Tutorial College (HTC) student studying English and environmental studies, joins just 80 other students selected from among 445 candidates nationwide.
     
  • Two Ohio University students to perform at Carnegie Hall 4/28/2006

  • For Jennifer Climer, a sophomore from Athens, and Joey Van Hassel, a senior from Westerville, Ohio, all the hours they've spent honing their talent are about to pay off; the two will be traveling to New York City this spring to perform in the National Wind Ensemble.

  • On April 1, the offices of the Associate Provost for International Programs and Director of the Center for International Studies were separated. Drew McDaniel was appointed interim director of the Center for International Studies and stepped down from his position as director of Southeast Asian Studies. Josep Rota will continue to serve as associate provost for international programs.
     
  • [Research News] Hundreds of Ohio University students to present research, creative work at fair 4/26/2006

  • More than 400 Ohio University students will turn out at the Convocation Center May 4 from noon to 4 p.m. to reveal what they’ve been working on outside of the classroom – research, scholarship and creative work on topics such as diabetes, theatrical costume design, nanotechnology, credit card debt, dinosaur anatomy, music therapy, hearing loss and fuel cells.

  • Rajko Grlic, a Croatian and Eminent Scholar of Film at Ohio University, recreated this scene as the premise for his latest film, Border Post. The project brought together the nations that once made up Yugoslavia for the first time since war tore them apart in the 1990s.

  • The WOUB Center for Public Media held a volunteer appreciation event on April 20 at the Margaret M. Walter Hall Rotunda room on the campus of Ohio University. The event honored volunteers who help in various capacities at the center.
     
  • 5K Walk/Run scheduled to honor former Ohio University Student Christine Wilson 4/25/2006

  • The fourth annual Christine Wilson Memorial 5K Walk/Run will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in Dublin, Ohio, to honor Christine Wilson, one of five college students who died in a house fire near Ohio State University in April 2003.

  • David H. Monk, professor of educational administration and dean of The Pennsylvania State University's College of Education, has been named Ohio University College of Education's 2006 Samuel I. Hicks Executive-in-Residence.
     
  • Ohio University students win Fulbright Award to Germany 4/21/2006

  • Three Ohio University students have won Fulbright awards to Germany: Eileen Kelbach, Meghan Schuck and Genevieve Waller. Both Kelbach, a senior German major, and Schuck, a senior German, political science and magazine journalism major, will spend next year teaching English in German schools. Waller, a master's student in art history and photography will spend the 2006-07 year in Berlin studying the history and theory of the photogram (a camera-less photograph) process.
     
  • 'LA Times' series, 'Guardians for Profit,' wins Ohio University's Farfel Prize 4/20/2006

  • For its four-part series "Guardians for Profit," "The LA Times" earned the Ursula and Gilbert Farfel Prize for Excellence in Investigative Reporting – a $25,000 award recognizing the finest examples of investigative reporting by print media in the United States. Farfel Prize judges named Virgin Islands Daily News' reporters Tim Fields and Megan Poinski finalists for the award.

  • Student travels to Ghana for village improvement project 4/18/2006

  • An international engineering service group is planning a bold project in Africa, and four Ohio University students are proud to be a part of it. Jennifer Phillips, a senior civil engineering major in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University, will travel to the West African city of Ghana this June as part of the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). The Central Ohio Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is sponsoring Phillips' participation.
     
  • Flying toward a career with NASA 4/18/2006

  • In eighth grade, Chris Dodson gained an interest in space and flight, making it his goal to one day earn his pilot's license and work for NASA. Now, Dodson, a senior mechanical engineering major, has already achieved both of those goals and is making giant leaps toward a full-time career with NASA. This story is about a strong undergraduate program and the opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom.
     
  • Breeze chosen as Ohio University's Employee of the Month 4/18/2006

  • Jill Breeze was honored at the Classified Senate's monthly meeting as Ohio University's Classified Employee for March. Breeze is an administrative coordinator in the information systems and instructional technology department at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and has been with Ohio University for five years.  
     
  • Indonesian media and conflict management delegation visits for inter-religious dialogue 4/18/2006

  • Ohio University's Center for International Studies will host a delegation of five conflict management specialists from Indonesia between April 19 and May 10. The group will be on campus from April 19 to 27 to finalize production of a series of videos on peer mediation, inter-religious dialogue and conflict management themes.

  • African Studies program welcomes visiting professors 4/17/2006

  • Ohio University's African Studies Program and College of Health and Human Services welcome visiting professors Kole A. Shettima and Prisca Nemapare to campus to teach about African health issues this spring. Shettima is the director of the MacArthur Foundation's Africa Office and co-chair of the Foundation's Higher Education Initiative in Africa. He is responsible for grant making in the Population & Reproductive Health area, Global Challenges, and the Partnership for Higher Education in Africa. Nemapare is the founder of Zienzele Foundation.

  • Ohio University's Board of Trustees met April 13-14 in Athens and approved several university business and academic initiatives and was updated on the university's latest developments. One of the most significant agenda items was the approval of the renaming of the university's College of Communication to The Scripps College of Communication.

  • Ohio University student Jon Harvey has been selected as a 2006 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. Harvey, a junior majoring in meteorology and geology was among 323 scholars chosen from a field of 1,081 mathematics, science and engineering students nationwide. He will receive $7,500 to assist with academic costs for next year.
     
  • Four Scripps journalism students win prestigious journalism internships 4/13/2006

  • Four students in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism have won national competitions for prestigious summer internships. Three seniors were among 85 college students chosen nationwide for Dow Jones Newspaper Fund editing internships this summer. A fourth student was selected for the Chips Quinn Scholars program, which gives exceptional journalism students of color hands-on training to bring greater diversity to the nation's daily newspapers.
     
  • Endowment to aid students in three Ohio nursing programs 4/13/2006

  • The nursing programs at three Ohio universities will each receive endowments of about $246,000 from the estate of Mary Ellen Clay, an Upper Arlington woman whose appreciation of nurses developed from her struggle with polio.

  • The College of Osteopathic Medicine celebrates ten years of providing healthcare to rural Kenya and international clinical experience to students through SHARE Kenya. Benson Bonyo, DO, ’98, started the program as an OU-COM student, fulfilling his childhood pledge.
     
  • Ohio University announces Baker Fund Awards 4/13/2006

  • Ohio University has awarded $66,365 to researchers through the Baker Fund Awards. These funds will support the research, scholarship and creative activity of seven faculty members. Projects receiving awards during the 2006 funding cycle range from sub-Saharan African music and dance in the School of Music to the processing of aluminum alloy parts in the School of Mechanical Engineering.

  • I entered the dimly lit Front Room one Thursday night to find every one of my senses, quite simply put, amplified. The florescent, colored lamps illuminated more brightly than usual against the black curtain. The sound of Starbucks' lattes brewing resonated through the room and around tables occupied by blushing couples, arms entangled in embraces. Some patrons were quietly studying, raising their noses from their books every few minutes to check the stage for the upcoming musical act. A lime green banner announced what was to come: Athens Amplified.

  • The Ohio Continuing Higher Education Association (OCHEA) presented Ohio University Without Boundaries with its Program Excellence Award for their work with the Sogeti-Ohio Program. The award was given Thursday, March 23, at the OCHEA’s annual conference award's banquet.

  • Two Ohio University students have been awarded Fulbright teaching assistantships in Indonesia for the 2006-07 academic year. Clarissa Kornell, a senior political science major, and Layne Hanson, a senior international studies major, will both spend the year teaching English in Indonesia.

  • Liu and two other Ohio University professors recently won a $1.67 million National Science Foundation grant to do just that. The three-year grant – one of the largest Ohio University has ever received – will enable Liu; David Chelberg, EECS associate professor; and Teresa Franklin, instructional technology associate professor in the College of Education; to develop engaging science curricula for middle school students.

  • Two individuals have been awarded Glidden Visiting Professorships for the 2006-07 academic year. Appointees are nutrition scientist Prisca Nemapare, Ph.D., an African AIDS researcher and activist, and physicist Lilia Meza-Montes, Ph.D., a nanoscientist promoting the participation of women in physics.

  • The Appalachian Scholars program will begin in fall 2006 with the goal of enrolling 10 students annually from Appalachian Ohio. The Athens, Chillicothe, Eastern, Southern and Zanesville campuses will participate in this program.

  • Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis met with the local media on Wednesday, April 5, in Cutler Hall to update them about the university's latest news and initiatives. The president began by inviting members of the media to attend the first conference focused exclusively on the ethics of blogging.

  • After 28 years of leading student groups through Toledo, Spain, and 43 years of traveling in Spain together, Ohio University-Zanesville professors Karen and Russell Brown decided this past summer was the last. Recently the University of Castilla-La Mancha honored the couple's dedication to students and their love for Toledo, Spain, in an award ceremony.

  • Bacteria attack 4/5/2006

  • Bacteria have grown tough. Researchers at Ohio University and Ohio State University have discovered that a target sequence of RNA can be disrupted by small synthetic molecules. This disruption could effectively shut off the bacteria and kill them.

  • Ohio University School of Visual Communication students will help with the judging of the Picture Editing division of the 5th annual National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism Contest.   • The Scripps Howard Foundation announced today that it will give $15 million to Ohio University's College of Communication. Kenneth W. Lowe, president and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Company, made the announcement at The Westin Cincinnati to an audience of Scripps employees, Ohio University faculty and staff, and alumni and friends.

  • OUWB and GRID Lab bring campus innovators together for training on serious game development tool 4/4/2006

  • Ohio University Without Boundaries has taken the leap into "serious" game development. OUWB partnered with Ohio University's Game Research and Immersive Design (GRID) Lab to offer training sessions on an innovative tool that helps campus users develop serious games - those that are created for training or educational purposes. The two training sessions took place March 16 and 17, attracting innovators from all reaches of the Ohio University campus.

  • The Ohio University Research Committee has awarded more than $75,000 to fund the research and creative activity of 11 faculty members. Projects range from a documentary on public broadcasting and democracy in Ukraine to a study on the chewing behavior of howler monkeys in Costa Rica.

  • Dru Riley Evarts named university editor 4/3/2006

  • Dru Riley Evarts has been on the faculty in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism since 1973. Now she has an opportunity to serve the university in a new role. She has been named university editor, Provost Kathy Krendl announced today. She began her appointment in the provost's office at the beginning of spring quarter.
     
  • Ohio University-Zanesville hosts grant writing workshop 4/3/2006

  • Ohio University-Zanesville will hold a comprehensive workshop that provides tools for writing a successful grant proposal. During this five-week session, participants will study grant components, develop a plan and write a grant proposal ready for submission. This course is designed to assist educators and other professionals in all areas of grant preparation. Sessions will be held on five Wednesday evenings, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. beginning on April 12.
