We all know those "Type A" personalities, people who have 30-page resumes and who can't wait to get involved in the next project.
At Ohio University Zanesville Campus, Adjunct Instructor of Health Sciences Kitty Consolo is just such a person. Her most recent endeavor, writing an "Ask the Expert" column for Runner's World magazine, a publication with a circulation of two million, is the latest in a long line of accomplishments.
A pioneer for women, in 1975 Consolo ran as the only woman on the Wake Forest University men's cross country team. They welcomed her on the men's team because no women's team existed at that time.
Since then, she has been the winner of more than 300 distance running races and has placed in the top 10 in more than 100 races ranging from the mile to the marathon. In 1977, she won the prestigious Charleston Distance Run 15 miler, which immediately launched her career by gaining her shoe company sponsors.
She was a two-time winner of the Revco Cleveland Marathon and by 1982 was ranked 22nd nationally in the marathon by The Runner magazine. From 1983 to 1990, Consolo worked on her doctorate while competing for the United States on several national teams in distance running, even qualifying for the U.S. Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in 1984.
A native of Iowa City, Iowa, in 1998 Consolo was appointed as the athlete representative to Ohio's Governor's Physical Fitness and Sports Advisory Board, on which she served as vice president.
Consolo received her doctorate of philosophy and Master of Arts, both with a specialization in exercise science, from Kent State University. She received her bachelor of science, specializing in physical education and health from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Consolo serves as an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor, is a member of the Ohio Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and has been a member of the Athlete's Congress since 1980.
Recently, she judged a speech contest for International Training in Communication, a training organization that improves communication and leadership skills in order to achieve greater understanding throughout the world.
Each month, Consolo also provides a running advice column, "Runner's Corner," for Premier Sports at www.premierraces.com. And now that she's on the list of experts for Runner's World magazine, Consolo looks forward to answering more questions pertaining to her field of expertise.
Consolo advises students and gives public service talks on various health topics at the University in addition to teaching health classes including jogging, tennis and anatomy.
