Multiple Impressions: Native American Artists and the Print opened at Kennedy Museum of Art on Sept. 10. The exhibition highlights the work of 13 Native American and Canadian First Nations artists, who work in both figurative and abstract modes of expression.
Artists whose work is featured include Fritz Scholder, R.C. Gorman and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, among others. Of the 23 works on view, many incorporate diverse references, from landscape and ancient rock art to popular culture. Several offer social commentary, inviting viewers to consider stereotypes of Native Americans and to delve more deeply into the realities of Native American history and contemporary life.
Multiple Impressions: Native American Artists and the Print was organized by Joyce Szabo, for the University of New Mexico Art Museum, and is traveling under the auspices of TREX: the Traveling Exhibitions Program of the Museum of New Mexico.
A public reception for the exhibition will be held on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view at the Kennedy Museum through Dec. 1.
