    Ohio University professional activity announcements

    Here's a look at recent accomplishments of Ohio University faculty and staff.

    Recognitions

    CHUCK HART, environmental health and safety, was elected to a three-year term as an officer (member-at-large on the executive committee) in the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association, a division of the National Safety Council. This professional organization represents Environmental Health and Safety professionals at universities and colleges throughout the United States and Canada.

    JIM KEMPER, human resources, was elected to the Mid-West College and Universities Professional Associate for Human Resources as chair-elect. Members of the association represent nine states, Manitoba and Guam.

    Publications

    IRWIN A. UNGAR, environmental and plant biology, and Carolyn H. Keiffer of Miami University, co-wrote "Germination and Establishment of Halophytes on Brine-affected Soils" in the Journal of Applied Ecology, Vol. 39, 2002. UNGAR and Ross A. McCauley, graduate student, co-wrote "Demographic analysis of a disjunct population of Froelichia floridana (cottonweed) in the mid-Ohio River Valley" in Restoration Ecology, Vol. 10, 2002.

    Presentations

    DANIEL TORRES, modern languages and literature, presented the paper "Sweet Melodious Mexican Swan: The Poetry of Don Carlos De Siguenza y Gongora" at the International Institute of Iberoamerican Literature during the session dedicated to Emerita Professor Georgina Sabat Rivers. He also read excerpts from his novel and collection of short stories.

    ANNE COOPER-CHEN, journalism, gave a presentation on the worldwide spread of the "Millionaire" show at the "The Future and Implications of Global Mass Media" conference organized by the Center for Global Media Studies, Washington State University. COOPER-CHEN was recently elected to the Center's board of directors.
