- Ohio Valley Summer Theater presents "Damn Yankees"
- The classic Broadway musical based on the novel "The Year the Yankess Lost the Pennant," is performed with an all-female cast. The combination of comedy and music makes this play a home-run hit for the entire family.
- Performances will be at 8 p.m. July 24-27, and at 2 p.m. July 28. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for students. Contact: Kantner Hall Box Office, 593-4800.
- Jazz at Noon
- Take that badly needed lunch break to enjoy some cool jazz on the College Green. The OU Jazztet will perform Thursday, July 26, and the concert is free and open to all.
- The group's repertoire includes a cross-section of jazz styles embracing traditional, bebop, hard bop and original compositions.
- Summer Teachers Institute on Teaching Appalachian Literature for Ohio Secondary Teachers of Humanities
- This conference is designed to enrich teachers' understanding and appreciation of Appalachian literature and to encourage secondary teachers of humanities courses to incorporate Appalachian literature into their classes. The region's rich literary heritage will be at the center of the institute; music and film adaptations of Appalachian fiction will provide participants with provocative entrees into their students' studies of Appalachia.

- Free movies
- The Summer Cinema Series of movies returns to Seigfred Hall's Mitchell Auditorium Monday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. Admission is free and all are invited. Here are some upcoming films:
- Thursday, July 25: "All the President's Men" starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford
- Monday, July 29: "Field of Dreams" starring Kevin Costner
- Thursday, Aug. 1: "When Harry Met Sally" starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal
- Monday, Aug. 5: "The Usual Suspects" starring Chazz Palminteri and Kevin Spacey
- The Athena Cinema on Court Street is showing free kids movies every Thursday at 1 p.m. this summer. "Jimmy Neutron" (rated G) will be shown July 25 and "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas" (rated PG) will be shown Aug. 1. Admission is free for kids and adults.
- Have an international experience without leaving your home
- Are you interested in an international experience without having to leave your home? Consider hosting an international college student for a Sunday afternoon or an overnight homestay this summer.
- Ohio University will be hosting a variety of students from other countries who are coming to Athens to study English and culture for four weeks. The weekend homestay is part of the program for students to learn more about American culture and life. There are two types of programs:
- Home Visit (one Sunday afternoon July 28)
For the home visit, you would meet your student(s) at 1 p.m. and return them to campus at 6 p.m. (It is possible to make alternate arrangements if necessary.)
- Fulbright Homestay Overnight (Saturday, Aug. 10, to Sunday, Aug. 11)
For the homestay, you would meet your student(s) at 10 a.m.and return them to the campus on Sunday August 11. These students are Fulbright Scholars.

- Youth sports physical clinics continue
- Sports physical clinics for Southeastern Ohio youth, are being sponsored by Community Service Programs and the Sports Medicine/Surgery Club at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Physicals will be offered for youth, ages 10 to 19, at the family medicine wing on the second floor of the University Osteopathic Medical Center, Parks Hall. Clinics will be held on Wednesday, July 31; and Wednesday, Aug. 7. Each clinic will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
- The cost of each physical is $15, payable at the time of the examination. Immunizations also are available at no charge to all youth up to age 18 receiving physical examinations. Physical forms will be provided for sports physicals. Physical forms need to be provided for children requesting camp physicals. Schedule appointments in advance.
- Parents should bring immunization records for children to receive immunizations. Children under 18 years old not accompanied by parents must bring immunization records and permission slips signed by their parents or guardians in order to receive physicals and immunizations. Permission slips must specify what children are allowed to receive.
