New director named to Ohio University School of Theater

By Karen Wyman

Robert St. Lawrence, associate professor in the Ohio University School of Theater, has been named director of the School of Theater, announced College of Fine Arts Dean Raymond Tymas-Jones. The appointment became effective July 1. St. Lawrence succeeds Paul Castagno who has been appointed Head of the School of Theater's M.A. Program in Theater History, Criticism and Dramaturgy.

"Bob brings a strong sense of tradition and continuity to the position and has been an important contributing member of the faculty for many years," said Tymas-Jones. "Given his significant experience in the field and commitment to the school and the university, he will be a valuable asset to the continued success of the School of Theater."

St. Lawrence has been on the Ohio University faculty since 1975, teaching stagecraft, lighting design, sound design and technical production. Additionally, he has designed scenery, lighting and sound for scores of School of Theater productions. In 1987 he established the sound design program in the School of Theater, in cooperation with the schools of Music, Film and Telecommunications. Prior to his tenure at Ohio University, he was technical director and production manager for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, responsible for resident seasons and national tours. St. Lawrence received his master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

"It really has been an incredible 28 years," St. Lawrence said. "The transition to administration promises to be a challenge, but, with the incredible support of my colleagues, as well as the support I have found in the dean's office, I look forward to working to build an ever more exciting future, for a great School and a fantastic faculty."

St. Lawrence has consulted on and designed systems for the Monomoy Theater in Cape Cod, Kantner Hall and The Ridges Auditorium at Ohio University, as well as Stuart's Opera House. He has been an active member of USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology) and has provided papers and chaired panels for SETC (Southeast Theatre Conference) in portfolio development, lighting design and sound design on numerous occasions since 1987.

Paul Castagno served as director of the Ohio University School of Theater (2001-2003) and as the University of Alabama's director of the New Playwrights Program and head of the M.F.A. Playwriting/Dramaturgy Program (1989-2001).

Karen Wyman is director of marketing and communications with the College of Fine Arts.
