DAFINA LAZARUS STEWART, College of Education, was recently elected to the Directorate of the Commission for Professional Preparation of the American College Personnel Association in March 2003.

ERIC ANDERSON, electronic media editor and videographer for WOUB Radio and Television, has been awarded a Bronze Statuette for the 2002 Reading Rainbow contest entered in the 24th Annual Telly Awards.

LENA WRIGHT MYERS, sociology & anthropology, has been appointed to the editorial board of the National Journal of African American Men, published by Transaction Periodicals Consortium. She will serve a term of 3 years.

JOE BRACKMAN was awarded the Jeffrey R. Spalding Memorial Award, given on the basis of participation, performance, and enthusiasm in the Student Professional Development Program.

ROSEMARY PENNINGTON, WOUB Newsroom managing editor, received first place for the best use of sound in a radio feature from the Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters Awards on May 17.

ANNETTE STEIGERWALD, modern languages, received the Volunteer of the Year: The Elizabeth Mills O'Bleness Award during the annual WOUB Radio and Television Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, May 22.

FRED KIGHT, WOUB assistant news director, received Above and Beyond: The Outstanding Staff Volunteer Award during the annual WOUB Radio and Television Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, May 22.

CAROLYN BAILEY LEWIS, Telecommunications Center director and general manager, was recently elected chair of the Higher Education Telecommunications Consortium (HETC); The Telecommunications Center was honored with the Group Support Award from the Friends of the Libraries of Ohio University. DOUG PARTUSCH, director of development/communications, accepted the award on behalf of the center.

JERRY OLSHESKI, Counseling and Higher Education, was named "Outstanding Rehabilitation Educator" at the annual conference of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP) on April 5 in Baltimore.

BETH VANDERVEER, College of Health and Human Services, assumed duties as assistant to the dean in support of the Office of Student Services within the college starting July 1.

ELMORE BANTON, cross country/track and field coach, retired from the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. He served 23 years of service and was given a reception on June 11 at Baker University Center.

LEONARD RALEY, vice president for university advancement, recently chaired the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) National Committee for Educational Fundraising Awards in Washington, DC.

RICK SHRIVER, associate professor of communication at Ohio University Zanesville Campus, has been named to the Fulbright Senior Specialists Roster by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State, and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.

CHRISTOPHER J. MORRIS, campus recreation, has recently been appointed to serve a three year term (2004-2007) as Faculty to the National School of Receational Sports Management.

LOUISE BELL, records management coordinator in business and residence services, has been recognized as one of the Mary Harrington Employee of the Month for her 13 years of dedication and service on June 2003.

RICHARD PERRY, zone maintenance specialist, was the co-recipient of the Mary Harrington Employee of the Month Award for June 2003 for his nearly 20 years of service to Ohio University.

GREG CLONCH, moving services, was the co-recipient of the Mary Harrington May 2003 Employee of the Month Award for his 21 years of commitment to the University.

MARY KAY ROSS, custodial services, was the co-recipient of the May 2003 Mary Harrington Employee of the Month award for her performance during her three years of employment.

ROXANNE ARBAUGH-DICKEN, airport operations, has been named the Classified Employee of the Month of May for producing quality work at the University for nearly 24 years.

CAROLYN BAILEY LEWIS, Director and General Manager of the Telecommunications Center, was elected chair of the Higher Education Telecommunications Consortium (HETC), which assists the management of college and university-licensed telecommunications, television and radio operations, and serves as a leadership group to expand the development of these services.

ANN KOVALCHICK, director of the Center for Innovations in Technology for Learning (CITL) and assistant professor in the College of Communications, received the Outstanding Educator Advancing Information Technology award for her diverse work, including projects to assist faculty in using information technology effectively, IT education for students and faculty, creative use of information technology in the learning environment, and research focusing on the use of IT as a cultural, social and instructional resource.

R. DAMIAN NANCE, geological sciences, J.D. Keppie, F. Ortega-Gutierrez, L.A. Solari, M. Elias-Herrera, UNAM, Mexico City, co-wrote Paleozoic and Precambrian rocks of southern Mexico- Acatlan and Oaxacan complexes in "Geologic Transects Across Cordilleran Mexico," Guidebook for the Field Trips of the 99th Geological Society of America Cordilleran Section Annual Meeting, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, April 4-11, 2003, published by the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Mexico City, 2003.

FRANCIS GODWYLL, College of Education, wrote "Institutional Language Policy: The Ghananian Dilemma," a chapter in "Political Independence with Linguistic Servitude: The Politics about Languages in the Developing World" published by Nova Science Publishers, Inc., New York, 2002.

TRACY LEINBAUGH, assistant professor of Counselor Education, contributed a chapter in "101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques" by H.G. Kaduson and C.E. Schaefer. The chapter titled "The Door to a Special Place" appears in Vol. II of the book, now in print.

DAFINA LAZARUS STEWART, assistant professor of College Student Personnel and Higher Education, is the author of "Development of Multiple Social and Cultural Identities," which appears in the just released "Woman in Higher Education: An Encyclopedia," edited by Ana M. Martinez Aleman and Kristen A. Renn and published by ABC-CLIO Books, Santa Barbara, 2003.

FRANCIS GODWYLL, educational studies, wrote a book chapter last year titled "Institutional Language Policy: The Ghanaian Dilemma" appears as Chapter 8 in the book "Political Independence with Linguistic Servitude: The Politics about Languages in the Developing World" by Samuel Byasi Obeng and Berverly Hartford, Nova Science Publishers, Inc. N.Y., 2002.

PAUL J. LONGO, Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development, wrote "Application of Logic Models in Rural Program Development" and "Amplifying Performance Measurement Literacy: Reflections from the Appalachian Partnership for Welfare Reform," the first two chapters of the "Desk Reference on Evidence-Based Practice in Health Care and Human Services," published by Oxford University Press, New York, N.Y., 2004.

GAR. W. ROTHWELL, environmental and plant biology, Selena Y. Smith, graduate student, University of Alberta, and Ruth A. Stockey, professor, University of Alberta, published "Cyathea cranhamii sp. Nov. (Cyatheaceae), anatomically preserved tree fern sori from the Lower Cretaceous of Vancouver Island, British Columbia" in American Journal of Botany, Vol. 90, 2003.

RICHARD HAZLER, Counseling and Higher Education, is the co-author of an article on the characteristics of school bullies and victims as perceived by public school professionals, which appears in the recent issue of Journal of School Violence, 1(4), 91-106.

JAMES HEAP, dean of the College of Education and professor of educational studies, responded to an invitation to provide a retrospective view on the contributions of the journal Human Studies in celebration of the journal's 25th anniversary. His contribution appeared in Vol. 25, 2002, and was titled "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose: Advancing the dialogue."

MICHAEL DUNN, graduate student, Michael Krings, University of Kansas, GENE MAPES, environmental and plant biology, GAR W. ROTHWELL, environmental and plant biology, ROYAL MAPES, geological science, and Sun Keqin of the China University of Geoscience, co-wrote "Medullosa steinii sp. nov., a seed fern vine from the Upper Mississippian" in Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology, Vol. 124, 2003.

BASSEM M. SABRA, physics and astronomy, JOSEPH SHIELDS, physics and astronomy, along with various co-authors, co-wrote "Emission and Absorption in the M87 Liner" in The Astrophysical Journal,Vol. 584, 2003.

DAVID A. DRABOLD, professor of physics and astronomy, Ming Yu, C.S. Jayanthi and S.Y. Wu, all of the University of Louisville, co-wrote "Enhanced Radiative Transition in SinGem Nanoclusters" in Physical Review B, Vol. 28, 2003. H. J. LOZYKOWSKI, professor of EECS, and visiting EECS assistant professor WOJCIECH JADWISIENCZAK co-wrote "Optical Properties of Yb Ions in GaN Epilayer" in Optical Materials, Vol. 23, 2003.

STEWART also presented "Critical Issues in Qualitative Research" at the pre-conference workshop of the annual meeting of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA).

TRACY LEINBAUGH, College of Education, Cher Ingleman, Seattle Pacific University, CHARLES LINDSEY, KERRY SEBARA and SHERRY INMAN STERN, all doctoral students in Counseling at Ohio University, presented "Cultural Competency: Are We As Culturally Competent As We Think? Differences Based on Physiological Reactivity" at a meeting for the American Counseling Association Conference in March 2003.

DANA HELLER LEVITT, College of Education, and TOM DAVIS, Counseling and Higher Education, co-presented "Religious Diversity from a Jewish Perspective," "If At First You Don't Succeed...Get Out of the Way: Ambiguity, Self-Efficacy, and Learning To Trust the Counseling Process" and "Factors Related to Promotion and Tenure in CACREP-Accredited Counselor Education Programs" at a meeting for the American Counseling Association Conference in Anaheim, Calif. in March 2003; LEVITT, also presented an in-service training to Ohio University residence life staff on eating disorders prevention and how to facilitate discussion with residents.

NANDA RANGAN, Bank One professor of financial service and associate dean, RAJESH NARAYANAN, associate professor of finance, and Kasturi Rangan, Case Western Reserve University professor, are presenting their paper "The Role of Reputation Scope Economies in Bank Underwriting" at the 2003 Bank Structure Conference on Corporate Governance hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Ill.

ADAH WARD RANDOLPH, College of Education, Educational Studies, presented at AERA Conference for Division F: History & Historiography and Division G: Social Contexts in 2003.

TERESA FRANKLIN, College of Education, presented "Technology and Pedagogy: Changing Roles of Pedagogy in a Project-Based Constructivist Environment" at a meeting for the Society for Information Technology in Education in N. M. in March 2003; FRANKLIN, SHUYAN WANG, instruction technology, and XINGIXI HE, mechanical engineering, co-presented "Improving Physics Understanding Through Haptics-Augmented Physics Tutorial" at that same conference; FRANKLIN, and WANG, presented "A Qualitative Study Examining the Electronic Portfolio" also.

VALERIE CONLEY, counseling and higher education, presented "Challenges and Opportunites Where Learning to Change: Establishing Teacher-Student Bonds in an Academic Context Where Learning is Central" at the American Association for Higher Eductation's Learning to Change Conference in Washington, D.C., in March. CONLEY also took part in the AAHE Research Forum.

FRANCIS GODWYLL, educational studies, presented "Exploring Alternative Strategies of Health Education to Reduce HIV/AIDS Epidemic" at the HIV/AIDS and the African Child Health Challengers, Educational Possibilities conference; GODWYLL, presented "Using the Mother Tongue (L1) as a Medium for Early Identification and Diagnosis for the Communication Disorders: A Look at Ghana" at the annual conference on African Linguistics; GODWYLL, presented "Instructional Language Policy: The Ghanaian Dilemma" at Ohio University Faculty Lectures.

Retirements

ROGER WATKINS, "Mr. Baseball," is a groundskeeper with Athletic Grounds with 34 years of service to the University. He will be honored with a retirement reception on Friday, July 25, from 1 until 3 p.m. at the Athletics/West Green Grounds Shop at Peden Stadium. The staff of the Department of Grounds, Recycling and Refuse is hosting the reception.

The Office of the Vice President for Finance will honor GLENNA BALDRIDGE, MARY BISHOP, SANDRA GOLDSBERRY, TONI HOLDCROFT, BARBARA "JANE" QUIVEY and LYNN WITHEM with a retirement reception on Friday, July 25, from 2 until 4 p.m., in the Baker University Center Stateroom. The honorees have a total of over 172 years of service at Ohio University.
LORI YOUNG, Communication Network Services, recently retired after 32 years of service. A reception will be held for her on Wednesday, July 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the HDL Center main lobby.

MARGARET SHIELDS, Records Management Assistant in the Office of Admissions, has recently retired after 25 years of service to Regional Higher Education and Ohio University. A reception will be held for her Friday, July 25, in the 1804 Lounge of the Baker Center Ballroom.

SARA E. MAYLE, Administrative Coordinator of Independent and Distance Learning Programs, has recently retired after 32 years of service. A reception will be held for her Thursday, July 24, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the 18040 Lounge of Baker Center.

FLORENCE C. SHARP, retired from the accountancy department. He was given a reception in Bromley Hall on May 23.

KLAUS ELDRIDGE, retired June 30 after 38 years of service in the mathematics department. He was honored at a reception in Baker Center on May 23.

MARY ANN FOWLER, retired June 1 after 35 years of service for the Office of the University Registrar. A reception was given in her honor at Baker Center on May 22.

ROBERT A. COURTNEY, retired from the position of Assistant Vice President for Finance and Controller. He was given a reception to honor over 26 years of service on April 30 in Baker Center.

CINDY MCALLISTER, retired from Ohio University and the School of Art. A reception was held for her on June 4 at the Ohio University Gallery in Seigfred Hall.

PAT GIBSON retired from dining services. A reception was held for her on June 30 in the old Nelson Dining Hall.

DIXIE WEST, retired records management assistant for the Transcript Area, had a reception on June 27 at the Baker Center 1804 Lounge.

WILLIAM REEVES retired 29 years of service. A reception was held for him on June 11 at the Russ College of Engineering and Technology in the Dean's Conference Room.

LUCILLE KROUTEL and LINDA MONTGOMERY, retiring after more than a combined 40 years of service in the Office of Student Affairs, had a reception in their honor June 12 in the Elizabeth Baker Room at Baker University Center.

WILLIAM GARDNER retired from the broadcast facilities of the Telecommunications Center after 28 years of service. A reception was held in his honor at the Telecommunications Center in Radio Studio A on June 25.
