Hopkins receives national dining services award

By George Mauzy

Greg Hopkins, capital projects liaison for Ohio University Housing and Food Service, recently became the first person from the state of Ohio to receive the Richard Lichtenfelt Award at the National Association of College and University Food Service (NACUFS) national conference in Kansas City, Mo.

The award recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the organization on a national level and have shown dedication and knowledge in the area of food services at higher education institutions.

NACUFS President Cam Schauf commended Hopkins on his achievements, noting that Greg has a "passion for the association" and is "always willing to take on a challenge."

Hopkins is currently the chair of the NACUFS board plan member forum and co-chair of the "Professional Practices in College and University Food Services" manual review team.

"I was really surprised when I won it," Hopkins said. "About halfway through Cam's introduction of the award recipient, I realized he was talking about me. I have just done what they asked me to do, but it feels great and is an honor to be included in such a select group."

Recipients of the Lichtenfelt Award, which was first presented in 1976 and has been awarded 37 times in the 45-year history of NACUFS, are selected from the organization's more than 650 member colleges and universities. The annual award is named in honor of the association's founder and first president, Richard Lichtenfelt.

A longtime Richmond, Ky., resident, Hopkins earned a bachelor's degree in social science/labor industrial relations in 1969 and an MBA in 1974 from Michigan State University.
