- Under the Elms Concert Series
- The Communiversity Band, made up of adult, college and high school instrumentalists, will perform in the Under the Elms Concert Series Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on the College Green near Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Feel free to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the music beneath the trees.
- The July 10 performance will be conducted by Michael Robinson of Fort Hayes State University. The concluding July 17 performance will be conducted by Ohio University Marching 110 Director Richard Suk. Contact: John Climer, 593-1670.
- Ohio Valley Summer Theater presents "Damn Yankees"
- The classic Broadway musical based on the novel "The Year the Yankess Lost the Pennant," is performed with an all-female cast. The combination of comedy and music makes this play a home-run hit for the entire family.
- Performances will be at 8 p.m. July 10-13, 17-20 and 24-27, and at 2 p.m. July 14, 21 and 28. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for students. Contact: Kantner Hall Box Office, 593-4800.
- Opera Americana
- The Ohio University School of Music presents Opera Americana Friday, July 12, at 8 p.m. at The Ridges Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. You can purchase tickets at the School of Music office or at the door. Call 593-4244 for more information.
- Free movies
- The Summer Cinema Series of movies returns to Seigfred Hall's Mitchell Auditorium Monday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. Admission is free and all are invited. Here are some upcoming films:
- Thursday, July 11: "Shawshank Redemption" starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman
- Monday, July 15: "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" starring Harrison Ford
- Thursday, July 18: "The Big Lebowski" starring Jeff Bridges
- Monday, July 22: "Air Force One" starring Harrison Ford and Glenn Close
- The Athena Cinema on Court Street is showing free kids movies every Thursday at 1 p.m. this summer. "Chicken Run" (rated G) will be shown July 11 and "Dr. Doolittle" (rated PG) will be shown July 18. Admission is free for kids and adults.
- The Stars at Strouds Run
- The Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a free public observation program Saturday, July 13, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., weather permitting, at the amphitheater in Strouds Run State Park. University astronomers will present a slide show, point out planets, star clusters and galaxies, answer questions and chat about the cosmos. Reservations are not necessary. - Have an international experience without leaving your home
- Are you interested in an international experience without having to leave your home? Consider hosting an international college student for a Sunday afternoon or an overnight homestay this summer.
- Ohio University will be hosting a variety of students from other countries who are coming to Athens to study English and culture for four weeks. The weekend homestay is part of the program for students to learn more about American culture and life. There are two types of programs:
- Home Visit (one Sunday afternoon: either July 21 or July 28)
For the home visit, you would meet your student(s) at 1 p.m. and return them to campus at 6 p.m. (It is possible to make alternate arrangements if necessary.)
- Fulbright Homestay Overnight (Saturday, Aug. 10, to Sunday, Aug. 11)
For the homestay, you would meet your student(s) at 10 a.m.and return them to the campus on Sunday August 11. These students are Fulbright Scholars.

- Free education classes for pregnant teens
- The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) Prenatal Health Education Program and the Ohio Department of Health are collaborating to bring a prenatal class series, designed Just for Teens, to the Athens area in July. The classes are free and open to pregnant teens and their parents and others in their support system.
- Remaining classes will be held July 16 and 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Preregistration is strongly encouraged. To register, call 593-2481 or 1-800-844-2654.
- Youth sports physical clinics to begin July 10
- Sports physical clinics for Southeastern Ohio youth, sponsored by Community Service Programs and the Sports Medicine/Surgery Club at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, will start July 10.
- Physicals will be offered for youth, ages 10 to 19, at the family medicine wing on the second floor of the University Osteopathic Medical Center, Parks Hall. Clinics will be held on Wednesday, July 10; Wednesday, July 31; and Wednesday, Aug. 7. Each clinic will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
- The cost of each physical is $15, payable at the time of the examination. Immunizations also are available at no charge to all youth up to age 18 receiving physical examinations. Physical forms will be provided for sports physicals. Physical forms need to be provided for children requesting camp physicals. Schedule appointments in advance.
- Parents should bring immunization records for children to receive immunizations. Children under 18 years old not accompanied by parents must bring immunization records and permission slips signed by their parents or guardians in order to receive physicals and immunizations. Permission slips must specify what children are allowed to receive.
