    Ohio University professional activity announcements

    Here's a look at recent accomplishments of Ohio University faculty and staff.

    New appointments

    CHARLES FOX has been named the new director of the College of Fine Arts' School of Film effective July 1. Fox is a global communications strategist and consultant with 30 years of experience in the film industry. He earned an M.A. in creative writing from The Johns Hopkins University.

    MING LI has been named the new director of the College of Health and Human Services' School of Recreation and Sport Sciences effective July 1. He comes to Ohio University from Georgia Southern University, where he is the coordinator of the graduate sport management program and was previously coordinator of the undergraduate program in sport management. LI earned an Ed.D. from the University of Kansas in 1992 with a major in sport administration and a minor in administration of education.

    JOHN DAY, management information systems, has been appointed associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Business. He helped found the department in 1983 and is the author of four textbooks, three of which are in their third editions. He earned a Ph.D. in experimental psychology with an emphasis in computer and statistical applications from Ohio University in 1983.

    NANDA RANGAN, finance, has been appointed associate dean for operations in the College of Business. He is the Bank One professor of finance and director of the College of Business MBA program in India. He won the College of Business MBA Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 and the Outstanding Graduate Teacher Award from Southern Illinois University in 1995. He earned his Ph.D. in finance in 1986 from Texas A & M University.

    ED YOST, management systems, has been appointed director of graduate programs in the College of Business. He was extensively involved with the design and delivery of the Malaysia Corporate MBA program, a collaborative project between the college and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the electric utility of Malaysia. He earned his Ph.D. in business administration from The Ohio State University in 1987.

    The Ohio University Telecommunications Center has announced a strategic restructuring of the WOUB Radio and Television management staff. The following appointments have been made: MARK BREWER has been named associate director of telecommunications; DAVID WISEMAN has been named associate director for technology and operation; DAVID RILEY was named director of engineering for maintenance and installation; STEVE SKIDMORE was named director of engineering for technical operations; DOUG PARTUSCH was named associate director for development and communications and is also executive producer for all fund raising activity at WOUB Radio and Television; TIM MYERS was appointed director of radio and interactive service; KEITH NEWMAN was appointed senior radio and television producer/director; JOAN PITTMAN was named program services manager; MARIE BAXTER-SPALDING was named traffic and promotions coordinator; and MICHAEL RODRIGUEZ was named student professional development manager.

    Recognitions

    WILLIAM CONDEE, comparative arts, has been selected as the Ohio University Class of 1950 Faculty Excellence Award Recipient for 2002 and will receive a $1000 award. Recipients are nominated by faculty and then chosen by the Student Alumni Board based on outstanding teaching and a minimum of 15 years teaching experience.

    CONNIE PERDREAU, education abroad, was appointed a member of the National Strategic Task Force of Education Abroad. She is the only member who holds the position of director of education abroad at a university. Other members include presidents and provosts of higher education and designated others with special interests in the field.

    TIM RYAN, health sciences, was awarded a cash prize in the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation ASSEF/NIOSH cash awards competition for generating innovative research ideas to prevent fatalities and injuries in the workplace. His entry, a relative strain feedback device, was entered in the category for "Fatalities and Injuries During Material Handling in both General Industry and on Construction Sites." It received a third place award.

    CLIFFORD HOUK, health and human services, was named American Industrial Hygiene Association Fellow. Only five percent of association members qualify for the distinction. HOUK is one of the originators of Ohio University's program in industrial hygiene, which is one of only five accredited undergraduate programs in the nation, and was recognized by the AIHA for making significant contributions to the field.

    CHRISTOPHER MORRIS, campus recreation, was awarded the Horace Moody Award at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association national conference. He is the associate director of campus recreation and director of intramural and club sports. The award is presented annually for outstanding commitment to student development.

    JANICE WRIGHT, School of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences, was appointed executive director of the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing. The association provides professional development opportunities, support, networking and advocacy for African American professionals and students in the field of audiology and speech-language pathology.

    MICHELE MORRONE, environmental health science, wrote "Sound Science, Junk Policy" published by Greenwood Press, June 2002.

    Publications

    JOAN SAFRAN, educational psychology, wrote "Supporting Students with Asperger's Syndrome in General Education" published in the issue of Teaching Exceptional Children, Vol.34, No. 5, 2002, and " A Practicioner's Guide to Resources on Asperger Syndrom" published in Intervention in School and Clinic, Vol. 37, No. 5, 2002.

    ANDREAS WEICHSELBAUM, graduate student, and SERGIO ULLOA, physics and astronomy, co-authored "Electron Dynamics near a Metallic Island Array," published in Physics of Statistical Solids, Vol. 230, 2002.

    BRIAN C. MCCARTHY, environmental and Plant Biology, and CHRISTINE J. SMALL, alumna, published "Spatial and temporal variation in the response of understory vegetation to disturbance in Appalachian oak forest" in the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society, Vol. 129, 2002.

    Presentations

    JOAN SAFRAN, educational psychology, along with her husband, STEVE SAFRAN, special education, presented "Asperger Syndrome: Teacher's Voices" at the 2002 International Council for Exceptional Children Annual Convention.

    KENNETH J. HEINEMAN, history at the Lancaster campus, presented "Model City: The War on Poverty, Race Relations, and Catholic Social Activism in 1960s Pittsburgh" at the Institute for Political History Conference.

    DAVID AXSOM, admissions, and BILL JONES, academic services, presented "Practical Guidelines and Tool for Evaluating Transfer Credit" at the annual American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. JONES also presented "Exception Processing: There Are No Precedents!" at the same meeting.

    JANE PIDCOCK, operations, and ROBERT MYERS, academic records, and others presented "Imaging -- Where do I begin?" at the annual American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

    DEBRA BENTON, registrar, facilitated "Are Your Records Secure?" and presented "Who Gets Access to Your Data?" at the annual American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

    STEVE FLAHERTY, regional higher education, presented "Developing a Regional Degree Consortorium: Point and Counter Point" at the annual American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
