    Friends of the Libraries Book Sale
    The Friends of the Ohio University Libraries will hold their annual Summer Book Sale Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the seventh floor of Alden Library. All books will cost $1 and books will be $3 per bag after 1 p.m. on Saturday.

    In addition, the Friends are offering a pre-sale for Friends member on Wednesday, June 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. Pre-sale books are $2 each and memberships are available at the door. Contact: George W. Bain, 593-2710 or bain@ohio.edu.

     

    Under the Elms Concert Series
    The Communiversity Band, made up of adult, college and high school instrumentalists, will perform in the Under the Elms Concert Series Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on the College Green near Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Feel free to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the music beneath the trees.

    The June 26 and July 3 performances will be conducted by Ohio University's Director of Bands John Climer. Contact: John Climer, 593-1670.

     

    Jazz at Noon
    Take that badly needed lunch break to enjoy some cool jazz on the College Green. The group Los Viejos Blanqitos will perform Thursday, June 27, and the concert is free and open to all.

     

    Free movies
    The Summer Cinema Series of movies returns to Seigfred Hall's Mitchell Auditorium Monday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. Admission is free and all are invited. Here are some upcoming films:

    Thursday, June 27: "Unforgiven" starring Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman
    Monday, July 1: "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" starring Sidney Poitier, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
    Thursday, July 4: INDEPENDENCE DAY (no film, University closed)
    Monday, July 8: "Reservoir Dogs" starring Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi

     

    Have an international experience without leaving your home
    Are you interested in an international experience without having to leave your home? Consider hosting an international college student for a Sunday afternoon or an overnight homestay this summer.
    Ohio University will be hosting a variety of students from other countries who are coming to Athens to study English and culture for four weeks. The weekend homestay is part of the program for students to learn more about American culture and life. There are two types of programs:
    • Home Visit (one Sunday afternoon: either July 7, July 21 or July 28)
      For the home visit, you would meet your student(s) at 1 p.m. and return them to campus at 6 p.m. (It is possible to make alternate arrangements if necessary.)

    • Fulbright Homestay Overnight (Saturday, Aug. 10, to Sunday, Aug. 11)
      For the homestay, you would meet your student(s) at 10 a.m.and return them to the campus on Sunday August 11. These students are Fulbright Scholars.

    Surplus Auction scheduled

    Free education classes for pregnant teens
    The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) Prenatal Health Education Program and the Ohio Department of Health are collaborating to bring a prenatal class series, designed Just for Teens, to the Athens area in July. The classes are free and open to pregnant teens and their parents and others in their support system.

    The classes will be July 9, 16 and 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Preregistration is strongly encouraged. To register, call 593-2481 or 1-800-844-2654.

     

    Youth sports physical clinics to begin July 10
    Sports physical clinics for Southeastern Ohio youth, sponsored by Community Service Programs and the Sports Medicine/Surgery Club at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, will start July 10.
    Physicals will be offered for youth, ages 10 to 19, at the family medicine wing on the second floor of the University Osteopathic Medical Center, Parks Hall. Clinics will be held on Wednesday, July 10; Wednesday, July 31; and Wednesday, Aug. 7. Each clinic will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

    The cost of each physical is $15, payable at the time of the examination. Immunizations also are available at no charge to all youth up to age 18 receiving physical examinations. Physical forms will be provided for sports physicals. Physical forms need to be provided for children requesting camp physicals. Schedule appointments in advance.

    Parents should bring immunization records for children to receive immunizations. Children under 18 years old not accompanied by parents must bring immunization records and permission slips signed by their parents or guardians in order to receive physicals and immunizations. Permission slips must specify what children are allowed to receive.
