    Ohio University professional activity announcements

    Here's a look at recent accomplishments of Ohio University faculty and staff.

    Recognitions

    CHARLES SMITH, theater, was recognized by The New York Times for his play, "Pudd'nhead Wilson." The New York Times reviewed the play as "almost sneakily serious, a potent and layered narrative with the sheen of a story for young people." The review appeared in May 2002. SMITH's play was performed on campus in April 2002.

    RUSTY SMITH, telecommunications, was given the 2002 Ohio Educational Telecommunications Network Commission Award in the Technical Achievement category for the locally produced program "Live from Fur Peace Ranch." The award recognizes a significant innovative technical achievement within Ohio public radio stations.

    ALFRED E. ECKES, history, was given the SyCip Distinguished Lecturing Award for the Philippines. Through this award, ECKES will have the opportunity to give lectures and present workshops at major universities in Metro Manila and possibly at other universities in the country. ECKES will also have the opportunity to address professional organizations. This award is funded by a grant from the Washington SyCip Family Foundation.

    ROSEMARY PENNINGTON, WOUB Radio and Television, has been named news managing editor. PENNINGTON is a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in broadcast journalism from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. She interned with CNN in London, England, and was named one of the outstanding students for her undergraduate work by professors from the Scripps School of Journalism. PENNINGTON's responsibilities in the newsroom include supervising Ohio University undergraduate students and assisting with the production of the evening news program, "Newswatch."

    ANN FIDLER, KASIA MARCINIAK and JOSEPH SHIELDS, English, earned Distinguished Service Awards from Ohio University's Office of Nationally Competitive Awards for their extraordinary commitment to helping students. The Department of English also received high praise, earning the Outstanding Department Award for its large number of mentors.

    PAUL WITKOWSKI, telecommunications, received the Ohio Public Radio Director's Award and the Ohio Radio Reading Service Special Achievement Award in May 2002. Theses awards are decided by Public Radio Directors and Ohio Radio Reading Service Directors and are given to an individual at a national, regional, state, or local level who has contributed significantly toward the fulfillment of the goals of both Ohio Public Radio and the Ohio Radio Reading Service.

    SHARON CONNER, Avionics Engineering Center, was elected Chapter Member of the Year for the Athens Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals in May 2002. Her service to the Athens Chapter includes developing, designing and coordinating the first Athens Chapter IAAP website. She has also donated time and items to the Washington Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, the Logan Kiwanis "Cans for Kids" campaign and the Logan "Concert in the Park Series" Chinese Auctions. CONNER has an associate's degree in secretarial science from Hocking College.

    KEVIN WITHAM, Office of Admissions, received the Life Membership Award from the Ohio Association for College Admission Counseling at the Spring Conference 2002. This award was given in recognition of WITHAM's distinguished service to college bound youth and outstanding contributions to OACAC.

    CHRISTINA S. BECK, School of Interpersonal Communication, has been named Book Review Editor of the Journal of Health Communication, an international journal focusing on health communication issues. BECK was also recently appointed as an editorial board member of Communication Studies, a quarterly journal published by the Central States Communication Association.

    RICHARD R. WHITNEY, student services, received the Statehood Achievement Award given by the Chillicothe Kiwanis Club to an outstanding area resident who best represents the "Spirit of Ohio." WHITNEY earned this award through his community service and his devotion and dedication as an educator.

    K. MULLINER, University Libraries, has been named to a two-year term as Chair of OhioLINK's Cooperative Information Resources Management (CIRM) Sub-committee. CIRM has the primary responsibility of selecting the databases and other information resources that OhioLINK makes available statewide. Also, MULLINER, M. Jocelyn Armstrong and R. Warwick Armstrong of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign co-edited "Chinese Populations in Contemporary Southeast Asian Societies: Identities, Interdependence, and International Influence," published by Curzon Press, Richmond, England, 2001.

    Books

    K. MULLINER, University Libraries, wrote Why Who Gets What When: Ohio University's Acquisitions Allocation Formula After 20 Years, a chapter in "Is Bigger Better? 2000 Charleston Conference Proceedings," published by Against the Grain Press, Charleston, S.C., 2002.

    Publications

    ROBERT L. WILLIAMS II, mechanical engineering, BRIAN CARTER, graduate student, Paoloa Gallina of the University of Trieste, Italy and Giulio Rosati of the University of Padova, Italy co-wrote "Dynamic Model with Slip for Wheeled Omnidirectional Robots" in IEEE Transactions on Robotics & Automation, Vol. 18, 2002.

    BRIAN McCARTHY, environmental and plant biology, and J. FORREST MEEKINS, alumna, co-wrote "Effect of Population Density on the Demography of an Invasive Plant (Alliaria petiolata, Brassicaceae) Population in a Southeastern Ohio Forest" in American Midland Naturalist, Vol. 147, 2002.

    ALFRED PHELEY, social medicine, DAVID ELAND, family medicine, TIFFANI SINGLETON, medical student, ROBERT CONASTER, lab research associate, JOHN HOWELL, biomedical sciences, MELYNDA KARLENE and JOYNITA ROBINSON, alumni, co-wrote "‘The Iliacus Test': New Information for the Evaluation of Hip Extension Dysfunction" in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Vol. 102, 2002. PHELEY and DONALD SPAETH, College of Osteopathic Medicine, co-wrote "Evaluation of Osteopathic Manipulative Training by Practicing Physicians in Ohio" in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Vol. 102, 2002.

    GILLIAN ICE, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Gary James and Douglas Crews of Binghamton University, co-wrote "Diurnal Blood Pressure Patterns in Long-Term Care Settings" in Blood Pressure Monitoring, Vol. 7, 2002.

    DANIEL MARAZON, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Julie Kalb and Richard Snow co-wrote "Potential Barriers to Control of Blood Pressures" in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Vol. 102, 2002.

    SHARON HUGE, ROBERT HOUDEK and SHERRI SAINES, University Libraries, co-wrote "Teams and Tasks: Active Bibliographic Instruction with High School Students in a Summer Engineering Program" in College and Research Libraries News, Vol. 63, 2002.

    JOSEPH SHIELDS, physics and astronomy, co-wrote "Calibrating Nebular Diagnostics of T* and Abundance" in Revista Mexicana de Astronomia y Astrofisica, Spring, 2002. SHIELDS co-wrote "Direct Analysis of Spectra of Type Ib Supernovae" in The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 566, 2002; and "An Efficient Strategy to Select Targets for Gasdynamical Measurements of Black Hole Masses Using the Hubble Space Telescope" in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Vol. 114, 2002.

    BRIAN McNAMARA, physics and astronomy, wrote "Radio Triggered Star Formation in Cooling Flows" in New Astronomy Reviews, Vol. 46, 2002. McNAMARA co-wrote "Interaction of Radio Lobes with the Hot Intracluster Medium: Driving Convective Outflow in Hydra A" in The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 568, 2002 and "Interactions Between the Abell 2597 Central Radio Source and Dense Gas in its Host Galaxy" in New Astronomy Reviews, Vol. 46, 2002.

    Presentations

    KEVIN WITHAM, Office of Admissions, wrote and presented "You be the Judge…In's and Out's of the Statement of Principle of Good Practice in the Profession" and "Working with your High School Profile" at the Annual Spring Conference for the Ohio Association for College Admission Counseling.

    DAVID BERGDAHL, English, wrote and presented "Discourse-Openers of Student Messages in Online Discussion Groups" at a meeting of the Poetics and Linguistics Association.

    GILLIAN ICE, College of Osteopathic Medicine, wrote and presented "Getting in People's Heads: the Challenges of Measuring Emotional and Behavioral Responses to Stressors" at a meeting of the Human Biology Association. ICE and Gary James of Binghamton University co-wrote and presented "Conducting a Field Study of Stress: General Principles" and "Managing Stress" at the same meeting. ICE, ABI KATZ-STEIN, medical student, and Robert Kane co-wrote and presented "Affect and Cortisol in Older Adults: State and Trait Effects" at the same meeting. ICE, JAJA YOGO, undergraduate student, and Bruce Dubin co-wrote and presented "Caregiving in Africa: the Toll of the HIV/AIDS Crisis on Older Adults in Western Kenya" at a meeting for HIV/AIDS and the African Child: Health Challenges, Educational Possibilities.

    OLIVIA SHEEHAN, College of Osteopathic Medicine, wrote and presented "Kick it Up a Notch!: Delivery of Faculty Development to Ohio Physicians: Past and Present" at a meeting for the Ohio Academy of Medical History.

    SUNYATA AUSIN, medical student, wrote and presented "Sundowning and Sleep Impairment in Nursing Home Residents" at a meeting of the American Geriatrics Society.
