ATHENS, Ohio -- William F. Sams has been appointed interim associate provost for information technology and chief information officer at Ohio University, effective Sept. 7, Interim Provost Kathy Krendl announced today.
His appointment will be through June 30, 2005, and a national search will be launched for a permanent position.
"Bill Sams has the experience and credentials to provide the leadership necessary to move Ohio University forward in its information technology planning and implementation," Krendl said. "I have asked him to focus his energy during the coming year on implementing recommendations emerging from strategic planning efforts."
Sams is chairman of the Board of Governors for the IT Alliance of Appalachian Ohio, a regional trade association, and is on the board of directors at the state level. He also serves as chair of the Technology Committee of the Athens Economic Development Council.
In addition, Sams currently serves as executive in residence for the Ohio University Without Boundaries program and has taught senior and graduate level e-business management classes for the colleges of business and engineering.
His career includes 25 years in management positions with Silicon Valley firms. He started his business career with Fairchild Semiconductor. Subsequent positions included vide president of marketing and sales, vice president of operations and general manager of a key division of LSI Logic, a Fortune 500 company. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Sams earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, both in business administration, from Ohio University, and his juris doctor from the University of Santa Clara.
