ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University Vice President for Regional Higher Education Charles Bird announced that he has selected the members of the Ohio University Eastern Campus Dean Search Committee.
The committee, which will be chaired by Eastern Campus Assistant Professor of History David Castle, is comprised of Eastern Campus faculty, staff and students, two members of the local community and Ohio University Zanesville Campus Dean Jim Fonseca, who will represent the Regional Higher Education system.
Joining Castle and Fonseca on the search committee are: Associate Professor of English Thomas Flynn, Associate Professor of Interpersonal Communication Sarah Mahan-Hays, Associate Professor of Mathematics John Prather, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice Janice Proctor, Assistant Professor of Computer Science Kathleen Van Voorst, Director of Academic Partnerships Judith Bush, Central Communication Specialist Debra Jamison, student Angela McGilton and community representatives Terry Lee and Keith Sommer.
Bird said he has advised the search committee to look for an energetic, creative individual who will be an active leader in the community, challenge the campus to further growth in numbers and educational excellence and serve as an effective member of the Regional Higher Education leadership group.
"We will conduct a national search for the next Eastern Campus dean," Bird said. "The person selected will need to be a strong academic leader, able to represent the campus effectively, both in the broader university and in the local community."
The search comes at an important time in the history of the Eastern Campus, as regional campuses play an increasingly important role at Ohio University. Enrolling more students and offering a wider array of courses and degrees are ways in which the Eastern Campus is committed to assuring that Ohio Valley residents have access to the educational opportunities required to help them reach their goals. The campus also prepares and encourages its students to support economic development in the area.
Eastern Campus will continue its focus on providing the first two years of baccalaureate education, which has provided area residents with access to associate of arts and associate of science degrees for many years.
"We are proud of our tradition of excellence in working with students in their early years of higher education," Bird said. "We also expect to continue expanding baccalaureate opportunities at the Eastern Campus."
Ohio University Assistant Vice President for Regional Higher Education Bill Willan is serving as interim dean of the Eastern Campus until a new dean is hired.
