Recognitions

DAFINA LAZARUS STEWART, counseling and higher education, was elected to the directorate of the Commission for Professional Preparation by the American College Personnel Association in March.

JERRY OLSHESKI, counseling and higher education, was named an Outstanding Rehabilitation Educator by the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals in Baltimore in April.

DAVID MATTHEWS, human and consumer sciences, and John Weigand of Miami University received the 2003 Interior Design Educators Council national Regional Chair Award for Best Paper for the presentation of "Effectiveness and Usefulness of Design and Communication Technology in Distance Design Studio Education" at the IDEC International Conference in San Diego.

DOROTHY LEAL, teacher education, was given the Celebrate Literacy Award by the International Reading Association and Appalachian Reading Council.

ADAH WARD RANDOLPH, educational studies, was reappointed to the Affirmative Action Council of the American Education Research Association as Division F: History & Historiography Affirmative Action Chair.

SANDRA TURNER, educational studies, received the Fulbright Scholar award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. She will be teaching at the University College of Education in Winneba, Ghana, for the 2003-04 school year and conducting research related to technology in schools in Ghana.

MATTHEW ZIFF, human and consumer sciences, whose photograph "Crab Pots" was selected through a juried process for exhibit at "Realism 2003 15th Annual National Competition" on display at the Cultural Center of Fine Arts in Parkersburg, W.Va.

DAVE HOLBEN, human and consumer sciences, was awarded the Students Affairs Faculty Contribution Award.

PAULA MCMURRAY-SCHWARZ, human and consumer sciences, early childhood education at Ohio University-Eastern, was elected regional representative to the Governing Board of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators.

MICHELE MORRONE, health sciences, was re-elected to a three-year term on the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council.

TOM SWEENEY, education, is getting the fourth edition of his book "Adlerian Counseling" (1998) with Taylor & Francis translated into Korean for distribution in South Korea.

ANDREA GIBSON, research communications, has been named director of the Office of Research Communications, part of the Vice President for Research division. She has worked for the office, which produces Perspectives research magazine and other related projects, since 1999.

REBECCA GILL, research communications, has been promoted to administrative associate of the office. She has worked for Research Communications since 2001.

KAHANDAS NANDOLA, Executive MBA Program, and TIMOTHY HARTMAN, marketing, were joined by the Marketing Department and the College of Business to celebrate their careers at a reception in Copeland Hall on May 2.

NANCY KASLER, retired on April 30 after 32 years of service to Ohio University. A reception was held in her honor on April 25 in the Elizabeth Baker Room.

GLENN DOSTON, education, wrote "Deans, Diversity, and Leadership" in SCDE's in Briefs, the newsletter of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, 2003; DOSTON and DONNA TROMSKI, student, co-wrote "Interactive Drama: A Method for Experiential Multicultural Training" in the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, 2003.

RICHARD HAZLER, counseling and higher education, wrote an article on the characteristics of school bullies and victims as perceived by public school professionals in the Journal of School Violence, Vol. 1(4), 2003.

MICHELE MORRONE, health sciences, published "Skills and Abilities Needed by Environmental Health Science and Protection Professionals in the Public Sector" Journal of Environmental Health 65, 6. MARGARET MANOOGIAN, human and consumer sciences, made two presentations at the National Council on Family Relations in Houston: "Providing support and presenting challenge: Adult daughters and their mothers in rural, low-income families" and "Linking generations: The family legacies of older mothers."

STEPHEN SAFRAN, education, presented "Asperger Syndrome: Transition and Future Planning" at a meeting of the Ohio Association of Career and Technical Education in Columbus in March.

TERESA FRANKLIN, education, presented "College is in the Palm of my Hand: Using Handhelds in Teacher Education" at the International Innovation in Higher Education Conference in Kiev, Ukraine in May; FRANKLIN also presented "My Teacher is Online! A Case Study of a Ninth-Grade Environmental Science Course" at the AERA Conference in Chicago in April.

MARC CUTRIGHT, education, will present a panel discussion on the roles of research-university faculty members in first-year student education at the American Association of University Professors in June.

STEPHEN HOWARD, education, presented "Islam in Africa: The Sufi Path" at the International Education and Graduate Programs Service of the U.S. Department of Education.

DAFINA LAZARUS STEWART, education, presented "Critical Issues in Qualitative Research" to the American College Personnel Association in Minneapolis, Minn. in March.

FRANCIS GODWYLL, education, presented "Exploring Alternative Strategies of Health Education to Reduce HIV/AIDS Epidemic" at the HIV/AIDS and the African Child Health Challenges, Educational Possibilities Conference, in 2002; GODWYLL also presented "Using the Mother Tongue as a Medium for Early Identification and Diagnosis for Communication Disorders: A Look at Ghana" at the annual Conference on African Linguistics, 2003; GODWYLL also presented "Instructional Language Policy: The Ghananian Dilemma" at Ohio University faculty lectures.

VEENA KASBEKAR, arts and sciences, Chillicothe, presented "Who's Who in Ohio: An Interactive Quiz for the Bicentennial" at the Aurco conference in Cincinnati in April.

VALERIE CONLEY, education, presented "Distinguishing among Part-Time Faculty: Developing a Taxonomy for Research" at a meeting for the Association for the Study of Higher Education in December 2002; CONLEY also presented "Challenges and Opportunities for Faculty Learning to Change: Establishing Teacher-Student Bonds in an Academic Context Where Learning is Central" at the Learning to Change Conference for the American Association for Higher Education in Washington, D.C., in March.

SANDRA TURNER, education, will present "How are Kids Today Using the Internet?" at the National Educational Computer Conference in Seattle in June; TURNER, JOE BERNT, journalism, and PHYLLIS BERNT, communication systems management, co-presented "Involving Middle School Students as Co-Researchers of their Media Environment" and "Gender Patterns in Middle-School Students' Media Use" at a meeting for AERA in Chicago in April.
