Members of the Ohio University and Athens communities have been honored for their contributions to community service.
Ohio University student Erin Estergren, a senior health services administration major, was awarded the 2002 Charles J. Ping Student Service Award, which recognizes undergraduates who demonstrate outstanding leadership and contribution to community service on campus and within the community. It is presented by Ohio Campus Compact, a statewide organization that promotes community service in higher education.
As president of the student chapter of Habitat for Humanity, she has played a key role in the Ohio University Habitat for Humanity house project in Nelsonville. She also has worked for the Ohio University Center for Community Service for the past four years.
The center presented Keystone Awards to Associate Professor of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences Brooke Hallowell, Professor of Education Rosalie Romano and Passion Works Director Patty Mitchell. The honor recognizes individuals who display exceptional and sustained service to Athens and the surrounding community.
Hallowell is a nationally recognized researcher in service learning applications in her discipline, and her service learning programs have become models for other universities. Romano was saluted for developing pedagogy she calls expeditionary service learning, which offers creative and civic-minded perspectives on education. Mitchell was honored for founding Passion Works, an arts program that allows new artists to showcase their talents. (For more information on Passion Works and other creative entrepreneurs, see Ohio Today, Spring 2002).
The Center for Community service works in partnership with campus and community organizations to provide service opportunities that benefit the region.
