The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial was held May 19 to address the global impact of AIDS. Speakers, including Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations Ralph Amos and Nathalie Bretton of the Athens AIDS Task Force, emphasized the affect of the disease in southeastern Ohio. Participants were also invited to share testimonials and tributes.
The event offers participants the opportunity to be part of a global commemoration. Similar vigils were held in more than 1,000 communities in 85 countries worldwide. The vigil, which was first organized in 1983, is intended to honor the memory of those lost to AIDS, show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, raise awareness of the disease and mobilize community involvement. The theme for this year's event was "Share your vision for a brighter tomorrow."
"The vigil offered an opportunity for individuals to dedicate themselves, either for the first time or once again, to the fight against AIDS, both globally and locally," said Charlene Kopchick, director of health education and wellness at Ohio University.
