Ohio University students, faculty and community members are invited to attend the annual Student Research and Creative Activity Fair from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. The event, co-sponsored by the vice president for research, will showcase innovative student projects that range from research in the biological sciences to creative work in photography.
Fair participants will be last year's undergraduate and graduate recipients of the Student Enhancement Award (SEA), John Houk Memorial Research Grant, Provost Undergraduate Research Fund, Voinovich Award and Research Apprenticeships in the Honors Tutorial College.
In past years, student presentations have included video clips, posters, interactive computer programs and live performances on topics ranging from acid mine drainage to music. Students who are interested in conducting future projects can interact with the presenters and receive tips about how to gain funding and pursue their studies. Information also will be provided to students on how to apply for various campus awards.
"The fair gives insight into how diverse, exciting and challenging student research at the University can be," said Sergio Ulloa, chair of Ohio University's Council on Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity and a professor of physics and astronomy. "It gives a chance for the community as a whole to see the high quality and dedication of the students participating."
Participants can choose to have their presentations judged by a panel that includes faculty and administrators from the Council for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity and recipients of the Presidential Research Scholar awards. Students who enroll in the competition must give a ten-minute presentation on their topic. The first, second and third place winners will be announced during the event and will receive cash prizes of $400, $200 and $100, respectively, to further their research and creative activity.
