- Recognitions
- DAVID WISEMAN, associate director for Technology and Operations at the Ohio University Telecommunications Center, was recently named the Ohio University College of Communication's Employee of the Quarter. The College of Communication established the employee recognition program to honor outstanding employees who set standards for excellence and innovation.
- RICHARD "DICK" FERGUSON, a zone maintenance specialist in Jefferson and Read, and JEFF WELCH, a building maintenance specialist in the Sheetmetal Shop, were named as Mary Harrington Employees of the Month January 2003. FERGUSON has worked for Facilities Management for 12 years. WELCH has worked at Ohio University for 20 years, and was said to be "a team leader who treats people in a very professional manner."
- ROCKY EXLINE, a zone maintenance specialist, and JOE WHITE, a building maintenance specialist in the Key Shop, were named Mary Harrington Employees of the Month February 2003. EXLINE has worked for Ohio University for 20 years. WHITE has worked for the University for 34 years and recently retired.
- CHARLES ALEXANDER, history, has recently been awarded the Seymour Medal for his latest book, "Breaking the Slump: Baseball in the Depression Era." It is awarded annually by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) for the best book published the previous year in baseball history or biography.
- OHIO STUDENTS AT WOUB-TV, have been honored by the Ohio Valley chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The students earned a NATAS Midwestern Regional Emmy Award for "Gridiron Glory: Season Finale 2002."
- AKIL HOUSTON, African American Studies, had his Black Music Seminar showcased in "The Post" April 2003. The class addresses political messages said to be hidden in Hip-Hop music lyrics.
- JOSE PIMIENTA-BEY, African American Studies, was interviewed on the radio about his book "Children in the "New World: Moorish History and Identity in the African American Experience" in March 2003.

- SAMUEL CROWL, English, wrote "Shakespeare at the Cineplex: The Kenneth Branagh Era" published by Ohio University Press, Athens, Ohio, 2003.
- Publications
- FRANK HORODYSKI, College of Osteopathic Medicine, KEONG-YEOLL LEE, postdoctoral fellow, and MARY CHAMBERLIN, biological sciences, co-wrote "Biological activity of Manduca sexta allatotropin-like peptides, predicted products of tissue-specific and developmentally-regulated alternatively spliced mRNAs" in Peptides, Vol. 23, 2002; HORODYSKI, LEE and Algimantas Valaitis of the USDA Forest Services, co-wrote "Molecular characterization of the insect immune protein hemolin and its induction on the gut during embryonic diapause in the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar" in Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Vol. 32, 2002; HORODYSKI also wrote "Panel Member, Entomology and Nematology Panel" which was presented by the National Research Initative Competitive Grants Program in April, 2003.
- GAR W. ROTHWELL, environmental plant biology, and Ruth A. Stockey of the University of Alberta, co-wrote "Anatomically preserved Williamsonia (Williamsoniaceae): eveidence for Bennettitalean reproduction in the Late Cretaceous of Western North America" in the International Journal of Plant Sciences, Vol. 164, 2003.
- DAVID A. DRABOLD and JUN LI, physics and astronomy, and DE NYAGO TAFEN, graduate student, co-wrote "Simulations of arsenic selenide glasses" in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, Vol. 15, 2003.
- Presentations
- ALLENA OPPER, physics, was among two teams of physicists to detect rare and long-sought reactions that show up the imbalances between different types of subatomic particle. She presented her research in a special invited session at the April 5 meeting of the American Physical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- FRANCINE CHILDS, African American Studies, presented "Human Rights and Gender Discrimination: Does a color blind society exist? Is Role and Gender still a question?" at the Oxford Round Table in Oxford, England, in March 2003. CHILDS was also a responder on the panel: "Stand-up comedy is gendered work: Gender and discrimination in the world of funny women." She also chaired and participated in "Who's taking care of the children?"
- VATTEL ROSE, African American Studies, presented "Observing Race in Brazil: The Play of Color with a Racial Hierarchy" at the African Diaspora in the Americas: Current Research at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in March 2003.
- KEITH HARRIS, African American Studies, presented "How does it feel: D'Angelo and the visualization of the black male body" at the National Council for Black Studies: Annual Conference in Atlanta, Ga. in March 2003; "Stand up, boy!: Sidney Poitier, 'boy' and Filmic Black Masculinity" for the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association in New Orleans, La. in April 2003; and "How does it feel in the Belly: Music, Image, and the Visualization of the Black Male Body" for Inscriptions in the Sand in Famagusta, North Cyprus, in June 2003.
- FRANK HORODYSKI, College of Osteopathic Medicine, KYEONG-YEOLL LEE, postdoctoral fellow, and MARY CHAMBERLIN, biological sciences, presented "Neuropeptide regulation of active ion transport in the larval lepidopteran midgut" at the Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in November 2002; and "Neuropeptide regulation of active ion transport across the larval lepidteran midgut epithelium manner" at the Invertebrate Neuropeptide Conference in Corlette, Australia, in February 2003.
- DANIEL TORRES, modern languages and literature, presented "Camp and Perverasity on Vestor Perlongher poetic discourse" at the XXIV Latin American Studies Association in Dallas, Texas, in March 2003; and "Thoughts on Tembandumba de la Quimbamba, The Caribbean Queen" at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, in April 2003.
- RICK SHRIVER, communication-Zanesville, presented "Digital Recording of Traditional Malay Musical Instruments" to the Audio Engineering Society in Amsterdam, Netherlands in March 2003; and "Ownership, Control and Political Content in Malaysian Electronic Media After Privatization" to the Broadcast Education Association in Las Vegas, Nev. in April 2003.
