CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (April 3, 2007) -- The Hilltoppers Disc Golf Course combines the natural beauty of the Ohio University-Chillicothe campus and a recreational opportunity for individuals of all levels of athletic prowess.
The 18-hole par-62 course winds through the trees and hills on the north side of campus. Participants can play the entire course or just a few holes, depending on their schedules. The fairways cover more than one mile.
Disc golf mirrors the conventional golf game's basic structure with a few wrinkles. The golf club and ball are replaced by a disc, which is smaller than a Frisbee, and baskets substitute for golf holes. Potential groundskeepers and caddies need not apply.
"Hilltoppers Disc Golf utilizes the campus acreage and promotes a healthy pursuit as well as an activity that can help to foster an increased sense of community by offering an activity outside of the normal classroom and office routine," Assistant Director of the Health and Wellness Center Allan Hurtt said. "It's a great way for athletes of all levels of competitiveness and aptitude to enjoy some exercise in a sport that requires little preparation or time. The course is literally right in our own backyard."
The course is open to anyone and is expected to be especially active during the spring when outdoor pursuits are increasingly popular. It is part of the campus' health and wellness program offerings.
Participants can check out discs free of charge at the Health and Wellness Center, located in Shoemaker Center. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
