Ohio University honors student leaders

ATHENS, Ohio (July 28, 2004) -- Outstanding student leaders were recognized at Ohio University's 21st Annual Leadership Recognition Reception. The students were honored for a cumulative collegiate record of leadership and service to the university community.

Director of Student Activities Anne Lombard said of the recipients, "These students are really the best of a great group and they stand out because of their meaningful service and commitment." Lombard believes it is important to recognize student leadership. She said, "Out of classroom involvement complements what happens in the classroom. This is the one opportunity where the university community comes together to recognize excellence that happens due to student involvement beyond the formal academic setting."

Dean of Students Terry Hogan commented on the university's appreciation of outstanding students, "We're committed to nurturing the development of leadership and proud of the leadership accomplishments of our students."

Receiving Outstanding Senior Leader Awards for demonstrated commitment to the university community:

  • LARAE BOOKER, Pittsburgh, Pa., was recognized for her involvement with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Senior Class Council.
  • MEGAN MARIE KINNISON, Kenton, Ohio, was recognized for her involvement in the OU Student Dietetic and Nutrition with Science Association, OU Hospitality Association and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society.
  • MARISA LONG, Jeanette, Pa., was recognized for her involvement in the University Program Council and Student Senate.
  • MATT MCKENNEY, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, was recognized for his involvement in the University Program Council and Student Senate.
  • RYAN MICK, Grafton, Ohio, was recognized for his involvement in the Honors College Advisory Council and Student Senate.
  • TARA STUCKEY, Waterville, Ohio, was recognized for her involvement with the Ohio University Board of Trustees, Association for Cultural Exchange and Chi Omega Sorority, Inc.
  • JAMIE LYNN WALTER, Columbus, Ohio, was recognized for her involvement in the Student Diversity Task Force and Student Senate.

Receiving Outstanding Graduate Student Leader Awards for demonstrated commitment to the university community:

  • Masters Student:
    MICHAEL D. D. WILLITS, Pataskala, Ohio, was recognized for his involvement in the Graduate Student Senate, Student Personnel Association and Corporate Communication Leaders.
  • Doctoral Student:
    LI WANG, Athens, Ohio, was recognized for her involvement in the International Student Union, the Chinese Student and Scholars Association and Graduate Student Coalition in the School of Communication Studies.

Receiving Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Awards for demonstrated commitment to the university community:

  • CHAR KOPCHICK, P.O.W.E.R. adviser and director of Health Education and Wellness
  • JANE PALMER, Advisor to Association for Cultural Exchange and Prevailing Wage Coordinator

Receiving other awards for demonstrated commitment to the university community:

  • CIARE THORN, Cleveland, Ohio, received the King/Chavez/Parks Leadership Award for her involvement with Ohio University Recruiting Society and LINKS.
  • JENNIFER LYNN HOWALD, Waldo, Ohio, received the Edwin L. Kennedy Leadership Award for Outstanding Community Service for her volunteer efforts with Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, the Son-Rise Program and ATCO.
  • NATALIE PARIANO, Westlake, Ohio, received the Rudy Leadership Award for her involvement with University Program Council, WOUB Radio and Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society.
  • REBECCA TUCKER, Cincinnati, Ohio, received the Stonewall Leadership Award for her involvement with Open Doors. She served as the first LGBT Commissioner of the Graduate Student Center.

Receiving the Latino Heritage Achievement Award for demonstrated commitment to the university community:

  • JUAN ECHEVERRY, Newark, Ohio, was recognized for his involvement with Students in Communication Management and Phi Gamma Nu Professional Business Fraternity.
  • DAVID GUMUCIO, Cleveland, Ohio, was recognized for his involvement with Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society and the Exercise Physiology Club.
  • GIORGINA RAMIREZ, Cleveland, Ohio, was recognized for her involvement with the Japanese Connection Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
