Local radio program explores job creation

ATHENS, Ohio (July 21, 2004) -- In four years, Monroe County has gone from double digit unemployment rates down to six percent. It's a problem many counties in this area face, but the way that Monroe County did it was unusual. They focused not just on bringing business in, but expanding existing small businesses.

On Tuesday, July 27, "This Time Around: Reinventing Community," airing at 8:30 a.m. on the WOUB Radio Network, visits Monroe County for the story.

Several large businesses were brought in, but they also focused on the small ones already there. A business counselor was available to consult with existing businesses--to help them grow and become more profitable, and eventually hire new employees. The goal was to diversify the job base in the county. Producer Sandra Sleight-Brennan has the story on the next "This Time Around: Reinventing Community." Interviews include Vaughn Smith, the director of Job and Family Services, Tru Jorris of the new Safe Auto Call Center, and Leeda Conn of Clarington, owner of Grandma's Cupboard.

"This Time Around: Reinventing Community" is a year-long series that explores the fabric of community, how and why communities change, and what the future may hold for Appalachian Ohio. Features focus on communities within the WOUB Radio Network coverage area and includes four quarterly call-in discussion programs. The fourth discussion program will air on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. A companion website is available at: www.thistimearound.org and allows community members to interact online. "This Time Around: Reinventing Community" repeats on Tuesday afternoons at 4 p.m. during "Afternoon Edition" on the WOUB Radio Network.

The Ohio University Telecommunications Center, a unit of the College of Communication, operates two television stations: WOUB-TV/Channel 20 in Athens and WOUC-TV/Channel 44 in Cambridge; one cable channel: WOUB II; and six radio stations:WOUB-1340 AM, WOUB-91.3 FM, WOUC-89.1 FM, WOUH-91.9 FM, WOUL-89.1 FM and WOUZ-90.1 FM.
