ATHENS, Ohio (July 14, 2004) -- Ohio University's Global Learning Community (GLC) received the Governor's Excellence in Exporting Award recently in Columbus. GLC is an innovative two-year program that focuses on global issues through real-world projects.
Presented by Gov. Bob Taft, the award recognizes Ohio companies that have increased sales volume through exports, have increased Ohio-based employment as a direct result of export activity or have developed and implemented a strategy to expand their international sales. Since 1991 more than 300 companies have received the award.
Provost Stephen Kopp accepted the award from Gov. Taft on behalf of the GLC. "This award adds statewide recognition to the outstanding accomplishments of the Ohio University Global Learning Community," said Kopp. "Since its inception, this certificate program has distinguished itself by preparing students to serve as internationally-minded leaders, skilled and experienced in problem-solving and tolerant of ambiguity in addressing complex global economic, political, religious and cultural challenges."
Open to all majors, the GLC brings together the resources of four of the university's colleges -- Business, Communication, Engineering and Arts and Sciences.
"The program brings tremendous benefits to both Ohio University students and students at the partner institutions," said Kathy Krendl, dean of the College of Communication. "Through international collaborations, members of the Global Learning Community have contributed to projects and communities around the world."
Ohio is the sixth largest exporting state in the United States and the only state whose exports have increased every year since 1998.
This is the second time an Ohio University program has won the award. The College of Business' Center for International Business Education and Development was honored in 2001.
