Two funding programs from the Office of the Vice President for Research have awarded $102,000 for faculty and post-doctoral fellow research projects this spring.
The Ohio University Research Committee (OURC) awarded $40,000 to six faculty members. The projects range from documenting the history of land use in southeastern Ohio to identifying the best drugs for treating patients who have had kidney transplants. During this cycle, the committee reviewed 22 proposals.
The committee, which consists of 12 faculty members from a variety of disciplines, awards funding for early-stage research and creative projects with a priority given to new faculty and staff. The committee historically reviewed proposals twice during the academic year. However, due to budget cuts, there will be only one review (Oct. 30, 2003) during FY 2004.
"The OURC application pool was very strong and represented the impressive breadth of scholarly activity occurring at Ohio University," said Scott Hooper, chair of the committee and an associate professor of neurobiology. "Unfortunately, budgetary constraints allowed us to fund a small percentage of a large number of truly meritorious applications. The committee is deeply grateful to the University in its willingness to continue OURC funding, which demonstrates the administration's continuing commitment to scholarly activity."
Recipients of the OURC awards:
- Glenn Matlack, assistant professor of environmental and plant biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, $7,261.
- Janet M. Burns, assistant professor of family medicine in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, $6,795.
- Sharon Inman, assistant professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, $7,029.
- Daniel Modaff, associate professor of interpersonal communication in the College of Communication, $4,650.
- Gerardine Botte, assistant professor of chemical engineering in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, $7,064.
- Gillian Ice, assistant professor of social medicine in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, $7,200.
Ohio University Post-Doctoral Fellowship Committee awarded two recipients $30,858 each for fellow positions. The committee awards funds to projects that will develop the next generation of scholars and will bolster the research and scholarship conducted at Ohio University. This year, the committee received 14 proposals.
Recipients:

- Sergio Ulloa, professor of physics and astronomy, in the College of Arts and Sciences.
