Four new members inducted into Ohio Communication Hall of Fame

By Erin Roberts

Four alumni were inducted into the Ohio Communication Hall of Fame at the Communication Matters banquet held April 27 at the Baker Center Ballroom.

The event kicked off Communication Week 2003, the 35th annual event that celebrates the six units of the College of Communication by encouraging student interaction with prominent industry leaders through keynote speeches, discussions and panel sessions.

The Ohio Communication Hall of Fame started in 1993 with one class being inducted. Two alumni from each school were part of the inaugural class. Ten years later, the Hall of Fame has been reinstated. New inductees include:

Charles Glover, BSJ '49, LLD '85
Glover began his career as a general assignment reporter for the Dayton Journal Herald, a Cox newspaper. He ascended through the ranks and ultimately became president of Cox Enterprises. Also, a World War II veteran, Glover is the author of the book, "Journey Through the Years: The Story of Cox Enterprises," and the weekly New York Times syndicated World War II Series, published in 600 newspapers worldwide from 1991 to 1995.

Rolland Johnson, Ph.D. '71
Johnson is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Three Eagles Communications, Inc., based in Lincoln, Neb. Three Eagles is a private company that owns and operates small and medium market radio stations in Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota.

Van Gordon Sauter, BSJ '57, LHD '83
Sauter, the former president of CBS News and Fox News, has spent more than 30 years working in print and broadcast journalism. During that time, he co-authored two books, "Nightmare in Detroit," a profile of the Detroit riots, and "Fabled Land, Timeless River," a photo-test book about the Mississippi River.

Joan Herrold Wood, BSJ '52
Wood received the first annual Joan Herrold Wood Award for Lifetime Commitment, an award named in her honor in appreciation of lifelong support of Ohio University and the College of Communication. She has received a variety of awards, including Ohio University's Alumna of the Year. After seven years as a feature writer, she left the newspaper industry to pursue a career in public relations, starting Wood Public Relations in 1987.

The criterion for induction now focuses on lifetime achievement. Communication professionals who are not graduates of Ohio University may be nominated and inducted. However, each recipient must have a tie to Ohio (either the state or the University).

Erin Roberts is the external relations coordinator for the College of Communication.
