Community and Campus Day focuses on family March 15

    By George Mauzy

Ohio University's Department of African American Studies and the Multicultural Genealogical Center of Chesterhill, Ohio, will host the second annual Community and Campus Day on Saturday, March 15, at Nelson Commons.

Equipped with a theme of "A Tribute to Family," the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and consists of a variety of activities and booths that celebrate the history and accomplishments of people of color.

The event will include exhibits from artists, historians, photographers and painters, handmade quilts, book readings for children sponsored by the Athens County Libraries, face painting, historical artifacts and Underground Railroad memorabilia. The mayors of Athens and Chesterhill, Ohio, will be in attendance. Ohio University Provost Stephen Kopp will also speak at the event.

Representatives of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine will be on site giving complimentary blood sugar and high blood pressure screenings throughout the event.

Historian and author Henry Burke of Marietta, Ohio, and Ohio University alumni Alvin and Ada Adams, who helped found the Multicultural Genealogical Center, will share some of the rich history of people of color in the Ohio River Valley. Glenn Barnett, a native of Barnett Ridge, Ohio, will use his genealogical computer database to help people research their family roots. Ohio University graduate student photographer Regina Boone and historian/collector David Butcher are among the exhibitors scheduled for the event.
